Find It By Field Searching!

A field is a particular part of a record in a database. For instance, when you search in the online catalog, the items in your results list are called records. Using the power of field searching can more easily produce better search results.

Commonly searchable fields include:

fields

Author - enter authors knowledgeable about your topic in the Author field, last name first, or, enter the last name of an author whose work you are trying to find

Title- if you know a title of a specific publication, use the Title field. For article databases, the Article Title field is separate from the Publication Title or Source field

Subject - the Subject field will limit your search terms to records that use your terms as subject headings. For instance, people can be subjects - using their names as subject headings will retrieve records about them, and not authored by them

Abstract - in article databases and e-journal collections, limiting your search terms to the Abstract, or summary of the article, is more precise than allowing your words to be anywhere in the full-text of the article
