What Is a Subject Heading?

Subject headings are standardized words that describe the content of an item. Subject headings are used in a similar fashion to tags, drawing together and collecting related information from various sources. You can use these tags to find material on the same topic regardless of the words used in the full text.

Be Careful...
The subject headings used in each database can differ, and also might be different from the subject headings used in the online catalog.

For instance, to descibe the indigineous people of North America:
--the online catalog uses the subject heading Indians of North America
--the Academic Search Premier database uses the subject heading Native Americans
--
the ERIC database uses American Indians
