How Do I Find Books on the Same Topic?

Now that you have tried a Keyword search and started to narrow your topic, you might want to find books that are more focused. This is when searching by Subjects comes in very handy.

Subject searching helps you to focus your searches, by using special terms called Subject Headings.
The Library of Congress--called "America's Library"--decides which words and phrases are used as Subjects.

Should I Search by Keyword or Subject?

Both!

First, use Keyword (Anywhere) searches, and then use Subject searches.

Books on your topic might have different Call Numbers and Locations in the library. However, books that contain information about similar topics or have similar ideas will have the same Subject Headings.

The next pages will show you how using Subjects and Keywords together will improve your results.

  • Books on the same subject usually have the same subject heading and are located around each other in the book stacks. Take a trip to the library to see this in action.
