Basic Limits in PsycINFO
The Basic Search in PsycINFO offers most of the limiters that are available in the Advanced Search. We will consider briefly how each of these is used.
Note: In the Basic Search area, you may choose only one category from each drop down menu. (For example, you may select one age group or one type of publication. In the Advanced Search, you may select any of the ones that are appropriate.)
Linked Full
Text: You may select this limiter if you want to retrieve only citations
that provide a link to the complete text of the article. To access the text,
click on the icon and link at the end of the citation. ( Linked
Full Text ).
References Available: This limiter will restrict your "hits" to items that have a list of references that you may access. Most of the items in the database provide a retrievable list of references, even when the full text of the article is not available.
Publication Name: You may limit your search to a certain periodical that you know is held by King's College. For example, you might search for articles on sleep disorders in the journal Child Development, and you would find articles on your topic that are available in our library’s periodical collection.
Publication Year: You may select publications from particular years or eras from 1887 and 2003. This is broader than Published Date.
Published Date: When you know the approximate date an item was published, you may restrict your search to that particular time period to eliminate irrelevant hits. (For instance: April 1990 to June 1990)
Peer Reviewed: This limits the search to articles that are scholarly and have gone through a strict review process by authorities in the field.
Publication
Type: You may limit to
books, parts of books, different types of journal articles, etc.
Note: "All Journals" includes all scholarly and
non-scholarly magazine and journal articles.
"Journal" refers to non-scholarly journal articles.
"Peer-reviewed Journal" refers to articles that have been
evaluated by scholars in the field of psychology.
English: Limiting to English is helpful, because PsycINFO includes literature from many languages.
Age Groups: You may limit your search to a specific age group from “neonatal” to “very old – 85 yrs and older.”
Population Group: This refers to the population on which a study is done, such as human, animal, male, female, etc.
Intended Audience: You may limit your search to materials that are appropriate for juveniles, general public, or researchers. This choice eliminates all items that are not labeled specifically for a particular audience, even though the information might be very useful, so use it only if necessary.
Titles owned by King's College: This limiter will cause you to retrieve only items that are available in periodicals held by King's. You will not access items with linked full text (unless you also select that option), or those that could be obtained through Interlibrary Loan from another library.
