MONTCLAIR , NJ -- Senior pitcher Christina D'Arpa limited the King's College softball team to six base hits and drove in three runs, including a two-run home run, as the College of Staten Island defeated the Lady Monarchs 5-3 in the opening round of the NCAA East Regional Championships Thursday at Montclair State University.

With the win, Staten Island improved to 27-11 while King's slipped to 33-8. The Lady Monarchs will resume play in the double-elimination event on Friday against the loser of the Moravian-Gettysburg contest.

Staten Island (27-11) took a 2-0 first inning lead when Michele Mazza opened the game with a single before D'Arpa smacked a two-run home run over the centerfield fence off of King's starting pitcher Kelsey Shreaves.

In the bottom of the frame King's would get a two-out single from Leanne Harvey, but Mari Valonis would strike out to end the inning.

In the second Staten Island would get leadoff single from Andrea Meise. After a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, Mazza grounded out to end the threat.

In King's half of the second Lindsey Hoerner would stroke a leadoff single to centerfield but was out at second on a force play off the bat of Becky Loring. A strikeout by Shreaves and ground out from Sue Roccia would end the inning.

Marianne Tepedino would led off the third for Staten Island with a walk before D'Arpa then flied out to center while Brianne Russo popped out to shallow right field. After Nicole Estrada poked a two out single to left, Stef Allen loaded the bases with a base hit to right field.

Hoerner would then replace Shreaves at pitcher but Meise reached base on an error to give the Dolphins a 3-0 lead.

King's would then go down in order in the bottom half of the third inning.

In the fourth Volpe reached base on a leadoff walk and moved to second on a bunt. Tepedino then moved Volpe to third with a bunt   D'Arpa would follow with a two-out RBI double to center to give Staten Island a 4-0 lead.

King's (33-8) would look to respond in the bottom of the fourth when Leanne Harvey reached base on an illegal pitch and moved to second on a single by Valonis.  After both runners advanced on a infield ground out, Loring came through with an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-1. Meaghan Galvin then drove home another run with an infield out to bring the Lady Monarchs to within 4-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Valonis would draw a one-out walk but was out at second when Hoerner reached base on a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning. After Loring punched a single to right centerfield, Galvin grounded out to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Russo would double for Staten Island and moved to third on an infield single. Allen would strike out but would reach base on a passed ball with two out, allowing Russo to score from third for a 5-2 lead.

In King's half of the seventh, Christie Parfitt would draw a leadoff walk. Annie Drimones would single and pinch runner Alyssa Wagner would advance to third on a throwing error. Knoblauch would cut the lead to 5-3 with a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Wagner, but Drimones was thrown out at second attempting to tag for the second out. Justine Maggio would then ground out to third to end the game.

Loring led King's with two base hits and an RBI. Shreaves took the loss, falling to 14-4 on the year, lasting 2.1 innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out two batters and walking one.  Hoerner pitched the final 4.1 innings, yielding two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out three and walking one.
