KING'S SOFTBALL REACHES FREEDOM CONFERENCE TITLE
GAME WITH PAIR OF WINS
WILKES-BARRE -- The top-seeded King's College softball team reached the
Freedom Conference championship round with a pair of victories on the
opening day of tournament action Friday at Wilkes University.
King's won its first game with a 4-3 comeback win over fourth-seeded
Delaware Valley. The Lady Monarchs (32-6) then fell behind third-seeded
FDU-Florham 3-0 in the first inning, but rebounded to win 11-3 in a game
halted in the sixth inning. FDU reached the second-round with a 1-0 win
over second-seeded Wilkes in the Devils first game of the day.
Against Delaware Valley, the
Aggies would open up the scoring in the first inning when
Bethany Pavlik reached base on a fielder's choice, stole second base,
and scored on a single by Kelly Andrews.
In the third inning Kim Harle would single and eventually score on a
double by Andrews to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead. Nicole Dorney followed
with a single up the middle to plate Andrews for a 3-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth King's began
its comeback when Becky Loring led off with a triple down the right
field line. Kelsey Shreaves would then hit a line drive to centerfield that was
nearly caught. But Loring failed to advance home when she was unsure if
the ball had been caught. Sue Roccia then drove home Loring on a fielder's choice,
cutting the Aggie lead to 3-1.
In King's half of the fifth, Justine Maggio would smack a leadoff double
to left centerfield. A controversial call would follow when Leanne
Harvey would single between shortstop and the second base bag. But Maggio made contact with Aggie shortstop Brittany Stockert on the play
and was called out for interference, despite the ball clearly heading
into the outfield before contact was made. Mari Valonis singled, moving
Harvey to second, and Hoerner reached base on a fielder's
choice as Harvey was thrown out at third for the second out of the
inning.
After Loring drew a walk to load the bases, Shreaves drilled a
two-run single to right to knot the game at 3-3. After a wild pitch
advanced Loring and Shreaves to third and second respectively, pinch
hitter Christy Parfitt walked to load the bases. From there, Julie
Bidwell would pinch hit for Drimones and drew a bases on balls from
relief pitcher Jennifer Bummer to force in a run and give King's a 4-3
lead.
In the sixth, Nancy Kauffman would start off the inning for the Aggies with a
single, then stole second base. Hoerner would then enter the game to
pitch for King's and struck out Stockert for the first out. Maureen
Ferguson followed with a bloop single to right field, moving Ferguson to
third. Hoerner then struck out Robyn Jackson and induced Kim Harle to
fly out to centerfield to end the threat.
In the seventh, relief pitcher Lindsey Hoerner struck out leadoff hitter Lacy Miles, but Pavlick would draw a walk. Andrews then popped out to second for the
second out of the inning. After a wild pitch moved Pavlik to second
base, Hoerner would strike out Nicole Dorney to end the game.
Harvey, Loring, and Shreaves led King's
with two hits each. Shreaves (14-2) also picked up the pitching
win, allowing seven hits and all three runs with three strikeouts in
five innings. Hoerner earned the save, pitching two innings of scoreless
relief.
Andrews and Kauffman had two hits each for the Aggies while Kirstyn
Ruhling (6-6) took the loss, allowing nine hits and four runs while
striking out two batters.
In the second game against FDU-Florham, King's fell
behind in the first inning when Kelly Nover doubled and Christine Heyl
hit a two-run home run. Julie Harnett singled and then score on a double
by Leah Minnick for a 3-0 Devil lead.
King's got on the boar in the third when Abbey Knoblauch singled and
Justine Maggio walked. After a base hit by Leanne Harvey loaded the
bases, Mari Valonis came through with an RBI single. Lindsey Hoerner
would then deliver a two-run single to tie the score at 4-3. Becky
Loring would then follow with a run-scoring single to give King's a 4-3
advantage.
The Lady Monarchs added three more runs in the fourth when Knoblauch
walked and Maggio reached base on an error. Harvey and Valonis would
follow with RBI singles, while Hoerner's infield out drove in a run for
a 7-3 Lady Monarch advantage.
King's pushed across another run in the fifth when Meghan Galvin singled
and later scored on a base hit by Harvey to up the lead to 8-3.
In the sixth inning, Julie Bidwell reached second on a two-base FDU
error. King's took advantage when Christy Parfitt stroked an RBI single.
After a Galvin base hit, Knoblauch would deliver a two-run double to end
the game at 11-3 on the eight-run mercy rule.
Harvey led King's by going 3-for-4 with three RBI
while Knoblauch was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Hoerner was 2-for-4 with three
RBI while Valonis finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Galvin and Loring added
a pair of base hits each.
Hoerner picked up the win in relief of starter Amanda Rizner who lasted
just two-thirds of an inning. Hoerner pitched five and one-third
scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out four batters.
Nover and Hartnett led FDU with two hits each.
Hartnett also took the pitching loss, allowing four runs on six hits in
two innings of work.
King's will now await the survivor of the loser's bracket game in
Saturday's 1:00 p.m. championship game. The Lady Monarchs, who are
2-0 in the tournament, would have to beaten twice in the
double-elimination event.
