KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS DVC, CLINCHES PLAYOFF BERTH
(Valonis Belts 9th Inning Home Run in Nightcap)
WILKES-BARRE -- Senior all-American
Mari Valonis (left) belted a towering
home run over the centerfield fence in the ninth inning to lift King's
to a 7-6 victory over Delaware Valley College, enabling the Lady
Monarchs to complete a doubleheader sweep Tuesday in Doylestown.
With the pair of victories, King's improved to 26-6 overall and 11-1 in
Freedom Conference play. Delaware Valley, meanwhile, slipped to 16-8 and
8-4 in league play.
With the second game tied at 6-6 heading into the ninth inning, Valonis
smashed a two-out offering deep over the centerfield fence to give the
Lady Monarchs a thrilling victory. Valonis finished the game
2-for-5 while also registering a double.
Lindsey Hoerner then sat the Aggies down in the bottom half of the
inning to pick up the decision in relief. The Lady Monarch rookie hurler
pitched the final five innings allowing one run on five hits while
striking out three batters
Abbey Knoblauch was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Becky Loring was also
2-for-4 in the contest. Leanne Harvey added a two-run triple.
In the opener, Kelsey Shreaves improved to 11-2 on the year with a
complete-game six-hitter. Knoblauch had an RBI single, Christy
Partfitt was 1-for-1 with a double, while Annie Drimones was 1-for-3
with two stolen bases
