KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS SCRANTON TOP EARN 20TH WIN
FOR 11TH STRAIGHT SEASONS
(Amanda Rizner Tosses One-Hitter in Second Game)
WILKES-BARRE
-- The King's College softball team earned its 11th straight season with
at least 20 victories as the Lady Monarchs posted a double-header sweep
of visiting University of Scranton Saturday at Betzler Fields. King's
won the first game 11-1 in five innings, then captured the nightcap 3-1
as sophomore pitcher Amanda Rizner (left)
tossed a one-hitter.
With the sweep, the Lady Monarchs improved to 20-6 overall and 7-1 in
Freedom Conference play. In the process, King's has now won 20 or more
games every since 1997. Scranton, meanwhile, slipped to 4-11 and 1-5 in
league action.
In the opener, King's pushed across five runs in the first inning thanks
to RBI doubles from Leanne Harvey and Lindsey Hoerner. Kelsey Shreaves
and Annie Drimones delivered run-scoring singles, while Abbey Knoblauch
drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another run.
The Lady Monarchs then took an 11-0 lead with six more runs in the
second inning. Becky Loring smacked a two-run double to right
centerfield while Sue Roccia added a RBI double to centerfield. Annie
Drimones and Justine Maggio added run-scoring singles while Knoblauch
forced in another run on an infield ground out.
Shreaves picked up the pitching win for King's, allowing five hits in
five innings of work. Drimones, Maggio, Harvey. And Shreaves all had two
hits each to pace King's 12-hit attack.
In the nightcap, Rizner hurled a complete game one-hitter, taking a
no-hitter into the sixth inning. The Lady Monarchs would score all three
runs in the first inning when Loring belted a three-run double to give
King's all the runs it would need. Rizner, meanwhile, was outstanding,
allowing only a two-out sixth inning single to Mary Beth Vogel while
striking out five batters. Knoblauch led King's offensively with a
2-for-3 showing.
King's is next slated to travel to face Delaware Valley College on
Tuesday in a makeup doubleheader originally slated for April 5. The Lady
Monarchs will then host Keystone Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
