KING'S SOFTBALL POSTS DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF YORK
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team used a five-run
sixth inning to overcome a 3-0 deficit to post a 5-3 victory over York
College in the second game as the Lady Monarchs completed a doubleheader
sweep Monday at Betzler Fields.
King's, which won the first game 10-3, improved to 16-6 on the year
while York slipped to 14-14.
In the nightcap, York held a 3-0 lead as King's came to bat in the
bottom half of the sixth inning. Singles by Abbey Knoblauch and Justine
Maggio were followed by a run-scoring infield out by Leanne Harvey. Mari
Valonis and Katie Fry would follow with RBI doubles to tie the score at
3-3. After a single by Julie Bidwell, Chrissy Parfitt came up with a big
two-run double to give King's a 5-3 lead.
York would attempt to rally in the seventh inning but Lindsey Hoerner
entered the game in relief of starter Amanda Rizner with two runners on
base to shut down the Spartans.
Maggio and Valonis led King's with two hits each as the Lady Monarchs
mustered eight hits off of losing pitcher Megan Lahner.
Rizner improved to 5-2 with the pitching victory, allowing all three
York runs.
In the opener, King's took a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run home
run by Becky Loring.
The Lady Monarchs added five runs in the third on the strength of an RBI
single from Valonis, a two-run single from Loring, and a pair of errors
by York to build a 7-0 advantage.
After York cut the lead to 7-2, King's added two more runs in the fourth
when Justine Maggio walked and scored on a double by Leanne Harvey.
Hoerner would then deliver an RBI single to put the Lady Monarchs ahead
9-2.
Kelsey Shreaves picked up the complete game pitching victory to improved
her season mark to 7-2, scattering 10 hits and striking out six batters.
Loring finished the game by going 2-for-4 with four RBI while Harvey was
2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
King's returns to action Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. with a doubleheader at
Lycoming College.
