KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS ELMIRA, 13-5, 9-1

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team improved to 14-6 on the year as the Lady Monarchs posted a double-header sweep of visiting Elmira College Tuesday at Betzler Fields.

King's won the first game 13-5 in six innings, before taking the nightcap 9-1 in five innings.

In the opener, King's built a 3-0 lead when Mari Valonis launched her fourth home run of the season over the centerfield fence.  Elmira, however, battled back to take a 5-4 lead with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth.

King's, however, would respond with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take an 8-5 lead thanks to an RBI triple by Valonis, a run-scoring double from Justine Maggio, and an RBI single by Leanne Harvey.

King's would end the game with five runs in the sixth inning as King's strung together six singles in the inning.

Valonis finished 3-for-4 with four RBI while Harvey and Abbey Knoblauch were both 3-for-4.  Maggio finished 2-for-5 with a two RBI while winning pitcher Lindsey Hoerner aided her own cause by going 2-for-3 with one run and an RBI.  She picked up the pitching win, allowing all five runs on 12 hits while striking out four batters.

In the second game, the Lady Monarchs exploded for six runs in the first inning, thanks to a two-run double by Kaitlin Liszewski, a two-run single from Amanda Rizner.

King's would build a 9-0 lead with three more runs in the second inning. The Lady Monarchs took advantage if two errors by the Soaring Eagles, and capitalized on a two-run single from Rizner and an RBI infield grounder by Kelsey Shreaves.

Rizner was 2-for-3 with four RBI while Liszewski knocked in a pair of runs.  Rizner also picked up the pitching victory, allowing one run on just three hits while striking out four batters.

King's returns to action Thursday with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at Delaware Valley College.
