KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS DESALES, SETS SIGHTS ON
WILKES SATURDAY IN REMATCH OF 2006 FREEDOM TITLE GAME
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team prepped for its big
Freedom Conference showdown with cross-town rival Wilkes on Saturday as
the Lady Monarchs posted a doubleheader sweep of DeSales University
Wednesday at Betzler Fields.
King's won the first game 2-0, then captured the nightcap 13-2 in five
innings.
In the opener, King's took a 1-0 first inning lead when Leanne Harvey
walked and later scored when Lindsey Hoerner drew a bases loaded walk.
King's would add its final ruin in the third inning when Mari Valonis
doubled and later scored when Hoerner lofted a fly ball to right field,
but DeSales outfielder Amanda Kensecki lost the ball in the sun,
allowing Valonis to score from second.
Abbey Knoblauch and Valonis led King's with two hits each. Kelsey
Shreaves picked up the shutout win for King's, scattering nine hits over
seven innings while improving to 5-2 on the year.
In the nightcap, King's took a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Mari
Valonis belted a three-run home run over the left field fence.
The Lady Monarchs added two more runs in the second when Meaghan Galvin
walked and later scored from third base on an infield grounder by Leanne
Harvey. Harvey would steal second and third bases, eventually scoring on
a single by Knoblauch.
King's put the game away with seven runs in the third inning thanks in
part to three DeSales errors. Katie Fry delivered an RBI double and
Harvey and Valonis each delivered RBI's.
Valonis was 2-for-3 with four RBI while Harvey added a pair of RBI.
Hoerner also chipped in with two hits.
King's, which improved to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in Freedom Conference
play, will next host Wilkes Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Betzler Fields in a
rematch of the 2006 Freedom Conference championship game won by Wilkes
8-7 in extra innings. Both teams would advance to the NCAA Division III
National Tournament.
