KING'S VALONIS NAMED TO ESPN THE MAGAZINE
ALL-DISTRICT ACADEMIC TEAM
WILKES-BARRE
-- King's College softball standout Mari Valonis has been selected to
the ESPN the Magazine All-District II Academic Team, as voted on by the
College Sports Information Directors of America.
In order to be nominated, student-athletes must
maintain a minimum 3.20 overall grade-point average and be at least a
sophomore in class standing.
In leading King's to a 38-9 record and a seventh straight NCAA Division
III National Tournament berth, Valonis enjoyed an outstanding season for
King's as she led or ranked near the top of the MAC Freedom Conference
in all major offensive categories. A junior first-baseman, Valonis
batted .420 (63-150) with 12 home runs, 11 doubles, four triples, 59
RBI, and scored 43 runs while posting a remarkable .787 slugging
percentage.
She was named the 2006 Freedom Conference "Player
of the Year" and was a first-team National Fastpitch Coaches Association
East Region All-American.
In the classroom, Valonis sports a 3.33 grade-point average as an
accounting major and has been named to King's Deans List on four
occasions. She is a two-time
NFCA Scholar All-American and a two-time MAC All-Academic Team
selection.
Valonis is a member of King's Accounting Society and performed an
internship with Prudential Retirement. She was also a participant in the
PricewaterhouseCooper XAct Competition. Valonis has served as a
volunteer with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and St. Vincent DePaul Kitchen
and has also bagged lunches for the needy as part of VISION.
"Mari is an outstanding student, athlete, and leader and she is very
deserving of this honor," said King's sports information director Bob
Ziadie, who nominated Valonis for the award. "Mari is not only talented,
she is an extremely hard worker who is humble and concerned about
others. She has been a great role model not only for her teammates, but
for other student-athletes as King's. We are proud of her and thankful
she has been a part of the King's community for the past three years."
