KING'S SOFTBALL EDGES YORK IN REGULAR-SEASON FINALE
YORK -- The King's College softball team closed out the regular-season
with a 3-2 victory over host York College Monday in York. The teams were
originally slated to play a doubleheader but King's had reached its NCAA
maximum of allotted games, including scrimmages, and was switched to a
single game.
With the win King's will head into Friday's Freedom Conference
Championships with a 34-5 record while York slipped to 21-17. The win
also enabled the Lady Monarchs to avenge an 8-3 loss to York on March 18
at the Salisbury Invitational.
King's would take a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Cassy Shiffer drew
a leadoff walk and Caitlin McAndrew doubled, moving Shiffer to third.
Annie Drimones would then triple to drive in two runs, The Lady Monarchs
would add a run in the sixth when Leanne Harvey doubled and moved to
third on an infield out. Kelsey Shreaves then followed with a two-out
double to give King's a 3-0 lead.
York would add two runs in the bottom half of the sixth
The Spartans tallied their runs in the sixth as Kelly Heitman walked and
advanced to third on a double down the right field line by Shannon Wood.
Heitman came around to score on a subsequent throwing error on the play,
allowing York to get on the board. Wood advanced to third on a ground
out and scored on a passed ball.
York threatened in the bottom of the seventh as their first two runners
reached base with consecutive singles but Shreaves, who entered the game
in relief in the fifth inning, settled in to get a strikeout and a pair
fly outs to end the game.
King's different players accounted for all six of King's base hits with
Harvey, McAndrew, and Shreaves accounting for doubles. Drimones led the
way with a 1-for-3 effort with two RBI.
Nikki Kotula (11-2) picked up the pitching victory, throwing five
hitless innings without allowing a run. Shreaves earned her second save
of the season.
King's will enter the Freedom Conference Tournament as the top seed and
will face fourth-seeded FDU-Florham in the opening round at 11:00 a.m.
Friday at Wilkes University.
