KING'S SOFTBALL IMPROVED TO 22-4 WITH SWEEP OF ELIZABETHTOWN

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team won its 15th game in its last 16 outings as the lady Monarchs posted a doubleheader sweep of visiting Elizabethtown College Monday at Betzler Fields.

King's won the first game 10-4 before taking the nightcap 10-2 in five innings. With the sweep, the Lady Monarchs improved to 22-4 on the year while Elizabethtown fell to 5-18.

In the opener, King's fell behind 3-0 in the first innings but score one run in the first and second innings, before pushing across three runs in each of the third and fourth innings to take command with an 8-4 lead. Becky Loring belted a three run home run in the third inning that gave the Lady Monarchs a 5-4 lead.

Mari Valonis was 2-for-4 with a triple while Justine Maggio also went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, and an RBI. Abbey Knoblauch also doubled for King's. Nikki Kotula picked up the pitching victory for the Lady Monarchs in relief of starter Nicole Conger. Kotula pitched the final three and one-third innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters.

In the second game King's again fell behind 2-0 in the first inning. Kings' would add a run in the bottom of the inning when Knoblauch tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kotula. In the third, King's added two more runs when Annie Drimones walked, stole second and third base, and scored on a double by Kotula. Valonis would then single to left and Kotula would score when the ball was misplayed by the Blue Jay outfield as the Lady Monarchs took a 3-2 lead.

King's would then put the game away with a seven-run fourth inning as the Lady Monarchs smacked seven base hits combined with two Elizabethtown errors.

Valonis led the way by going 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Kotula was 2-for-2 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Knoblauch was 2-for-3 with a triple and scored two runs. Sue Roccia chipped in by going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Colleen Spadora earned the five-inning complete game win for King's, allowing five hits and two runs, one which was earned.

King's returns to action Wednesday with an important Freedom Conference doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. at the University of Scranton.
