KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS DEL-VALLEY, IMPROVES TO 20-4
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team remained in a
first-place tie with Wilkes University in the Freedom Conference
standings as the Lady Monarchs posted a doubleheader sweep over Delaware
Valley College Saturday at Betzler Fields.
King's, which won by scores of 5-2 and 10-1 in five innings, improved to
20-4 overall and 7-1 in Freedom Conference play. Wilkes, which earned a
sweep of DeSales, is also 7-1 in league action.
In the first game, stranded 12 runners but pulled out the victory. The
Lady Monarchs fell behind 2-0 after two innings but cut the lead to 2-1
in the third. Nikki Kotula and Mari Valonis both singled and moved up a
base on a walk to Kate Shiffer. Kelsey Shreaves then brought home Kotula
on an infield grounder.
King's would score three runs in the fourth Justine Maggio singled and
Kotula and Valonis each reached base on a fielder's choice. Shiffer
would draw a bases-loaded walk to score Maggio before Shreaves followed
with a two-run single to centerfield.
The Lady Monarchs added their final run in the fifth when Maggio was hit
by a pitch, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Kotula.
Shreaves, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI, also picked up the pitching
victory in relief to improve to 8-0 on the year. Abbey Knoblauch and
Valonis were each 2-for-4.
In the nightcap, King's scored all 10 run sin the first inning to cruise
to the five-inning triumph.
Maggio, Valonis, and Leanne Harvey each posted two hits for the Lady
Monarchs. Freshman hurler Amanda Rizner (5-0)allowed just three hits in
the contest, yielding just an unearned run in the fourth inning.
King's will host Elizabethtown College Monday at 3:00 p.m. at Betzler
Fields.
