KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS MISERICORDIA
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team improved to 17-3 on the
year as the Lady Monarchs posted a doubleheader sweep of College
Misericordia Wednesday at Betzler Fields.
King's won the first game 4-1, then captured the nightcap 3-0.
In the opener, Misericordia took a 1-0 first inning lead when Lindsay
Miller singled followed by a double from Kerri Buckman then lofted a
sacrifice fly to score Miller.
King's would take a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Justine Maggio singled
and scored on a triple by Nikki Kotula. Mari Valonis then delivered a
sacrifice fly to bring Kotula in with the go-ahead run.
The Lady Monarchs added two more runs in the fifth when Kelsey Shreaves
doubled and scored on a double by Leanne Harvey. Harvey would then score
on a Cougar error as King's took a 4-1 lead.
Shreaves picked up the win in relief of starter Nicole Conger, tossing
three and two-thirds scoreless innings. Kristi Devens took the loss,
allowing four runs, three which were earned, on five hits in six
innings.
Buckman went 4-for-4 while Devens and Jess Davidson added two hits for
the Cougars.
The second game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Kotula
reached base on an error and Valonis followed with a single. Kate
Shiffer and Julie Bidwell then delivered an RBI singles to give the lady
Monarchs a 2-0 lead.
King's added the game's final run in the sixth inning when Valonis
launched a towering home run over the left field scoreboard and onto the
Monarch football field.
Valonis and Shiffer led King's with two hits each while freshman Colleen
Spadora tossed a three-hitter.
Buckman, Jen Gehman, and Klimas each had base hits for Misericordia.
Devens took the loss, allowing two runs in four innings.
King's will next travel to Wilkes on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m.
doubleheader.
