WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team posted a pair of wins on Friday to advance to the championship round of the 2005 Freedom Conference Championships set to conclude Saturday at Wilkes University.

In the opener, second-seeded King's downed third-seeded Wilkes 5-4 in eight innings. The Lady Monarchs then followed with a 9-0, five-inning win over top-seeded Lycoming. King's improved to 30-10 on the year.

In the opening win against Wilkes, Kristin Brady drew a one-out bases loaded walk, scoring Kelley Vaxmonsky with the wining run in the eighth inning.

With the win, King's improved to 28-9 while Wilkes slipped to 27-12. The Lady Monarchs move on to the second round to face top-seeded Lycoming at 4:30 p.m.

With the game tied 4-4, Vaxmonsky led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double, followed by a bloop single from Justine Maggio. After Nikki Kotula flied out to center field, Wilkes hurler Laurie Agresti's wild pitch advanced both runners to second and third. Wilkes then intentionally walked Stacey Preambo to pitch to Brady. With the count 3-and-1, Agresti threw ball four to bring in Vaxmonsky with the deciding run.

King's opened the scoring in the second inning when junior third baseman Kate Shiffer drilled a one-out fast ball over the centerfield fence to give the Lady Monarchs a 1-0 lead.

Wilkes answered in the top half of the third inning when Alex Ingram singled and stole second, followed by a walk to Alexis Petite. Jan Nunemacher then delivered an RBI single to tie the score at 1-1 before Petite scored on an error by Vaxmonsky to take a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Monarchs would immediately respond in the bottom half of the inning when Maggio led off with a walk and moved to second on a one-out single by Preambo. After Brady singled to load the bases, Mari Valonis followed with a base hit to centerfield to drive in Maggio. Kate Shiffer then came up big with a double to left centerfield to plate both Preambo and Brady to give King's a 4-2 lead.

In the fourth, Wilkes took advantage of a pair of errors from Preambo at shortstop which plated a pair of unearned runs. With the bases loaded, pitcher Sarah Genewski hit Ingram to force in a run, followed by an RBI single from Andrea Dominick to tie the score at 4-4.

Preambo, Brady, and Kate Shiffer all had three hits for King's. Genewski improved her pitching mark to 9-4 in yielding four runs, one which was earned, on seven hits while striking out four batters.

Dominick and Nunemacher had two hits to pace Wilkes offensively.  Agresti allowed five runs on 11 hits while falling to 19-5 on the year.

In the second game against Lycoming, sophomore hurler Nikki Kotula tossed a two-hitter and struck out four in the contest.

King's scored two run in the first inning, three in the second, one in the third, and three in the fourth to seal the victory.

The Lady Monarchs pounded out 11 hits for the second straight game. Kate Shiffer was 2-for-2 with a home run and scored a pair of runs while Kristin Brady was 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.  Vaxmonsky was 2-for-4 with two runs while Preambo went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kotula aided her own cause by going 1-for-4 with an RBI while scoring two runs.

Chris Caroselli and Sarah Longino had hits for Lycoming. Kristin Reese took the pitching loss, allowing all nine runs, seven which were earned, on 11 hits while striking out three batters.

King's will play for the championship Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against the survivor of Wilkes, Lycoming and FDU.

Wilkes and FDU play at 9:00 a.m. with the winner facing Lycoming at 11:00 a.m. The winner will then play King's and will need to defeat the Lady Monarchs twice in the double-elimination event while one King's victory will secure a sixth straight conference championship.
