KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS SCRANTON
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team
remained unbeaten in Freedom Conference play as the Lady Monarchs posted a
doubleheader sweep of the University of Scranton Tuesday at Betzler
Fields.
The Lady Monarchs won the first game 6-0, the captured the nightcap 9-1 in
five innings. In the process, King's improved to 14-4 overall and 4-0 in
conference play. Scranton slipped to 2-12 and 0-2.
In the opener, the Lady Monarchs pounded out 12 hits in the game. King's
scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning on an RBI single from
Annie Drimones and a run-scoring double from Kristin Brady. King's added
another unearned run in the second when Mari Valonis reached base on an
error and scored off a double from Kate Shiffer.
The Lady Monarchs added three more runs in the fifth when Vaxmonsky and
Drimones singled. After an infield his by Stacey Preambo loaded the bases,
Brady delivered a run-scoring single. Valonis then followed with another
RBI single before Kate Shiffer's infield ground out brought home Preambo
with the final run of the game.
Vaxmonsky and Drimones each went 3-for-4 and scored two runs while Kristin
Brady was 2-for-3. Sarah Genewski picked up the pitching win, scattering
four hits and striking out two batters without issuing a walk.
Melanie Carnevale and Allison Schmidt had doubles for Scranton while ,
Rebecca Devlin and Mary Beth Vogel added singles for the Lady Royals.
Tanya Parolari took the pitching loss, allowing all 12 hits and six runs,
three which were earned.
In the nightcap, King's jumped out to a quick lead with six runs in the
bottom half of the first inning. Vaxmonsky doubled, followed by a single
from Drimones. After both runners advanced on a passed ball, Vaxmonsky
would touch home on a wild pitch from staring pitcher Kim Eckenrode. After
Nikki Kotula drew a walk, Preambo then stroked an RBI single before Brady
ripped a two-run triple to push the score to 4-0. Valonis would then drive
in Brady with a single, while Cassy Shiffer came through with a
run-scoring double.
The Lady Monarchs would add three more runs in the second when Drimones
walked and Kotula singled. With two outs, Brady reached on an error,
allowing Drimones to score and Kotula to advance to second. Valonis then
drilled a two-run triple to push the score to 9-0. Scranton added its lone
run in the fourth when Carnevale doubled and scored on a single from
Devlin. The game was then halted after five innings due to the eight-run
rule.
Kotula picked up the pitching win for King's, allowing four hits in five
innings and striking out eight batters.
Vaxmonsky was 2-for-3 while Valonis was 2-of-3 with three RBI.
Schmidt led the Lady Royals with two hits, while Devlin and Carnevale had
one hit each for Scranton. Eckenrode took the pitching loss, allowing nine
runs, six which were earned and walked two batters. Carolyn King and Beth
Mullen each pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the Lady Royals.
King's will next play at Elizabethtown College Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
