FIVE KING'S SOFTBALL PLAYERS NAMED REGIONAL
ALL-AMERICANS
WILKES-BARRE -- Five members of the King's
College softball team have been named to the 2004 National Fastpitch
Coaches Association East Region all-American team.
Selected to the first-team was senior
first-baseman Maria Zangardi (Pittston Twp./Seton Catholic), junior
shortstop Stacey Preambo (Jessup/Valley View), junior catcher Kristin
Brady (Mayfield/Bishop O'Hara), and freshman designated hitter
Mari Valonis (Dickson City/Mid-Valley). Senior outfielder Linda Manarchuck
(Eynon/Valley View) was a second-team selection.
The five players led King's to a new school
single-season victory mark in concluding a 39-10 campaign as the Lady
Monarchs won a fifth straight Freedom Conference championship and reached
the NCAA Division III National Tournament for a fifth consecutive year.
Zangardi, a three-time all-regional
selection, led the team with a .403 (71-176) batting average with eight
home runs, 18 doubles, six triples, 43 RBI, and a .710 slugging
percentage. Zangardi, who scored 41 runs on the year, also set a King's
single-season record with 71 base hits. She was also one of the top
defensive players in the nation, finishing with a .992 field percentage
after making just three errors in 371 chances at first base.
Preambo made the difficult transition from
second base to shortstop and enjoyed a remarkable season in which she
batted .396 (63-159) while setting a new school-record with an NCAA
Division III leading 16 home runs. Preambo also added 12 doubles, seven
triples, a school-record 62 RBI, and scored 55 runs while registering a
whopping .862 slugging percentage.
Brady was outstanding behind the plate for
King's where she threw out a total of 16 runners on the base paths and
posted a .996 fielding percentage, making just one error in 241 chances.
She also batted .343 (48-140) with seven home runs, 10 doubles, five
triples, 38 RBI while scoring 40 runs and posting a 636 slugging
percentage.
As a rookie, Valonis enjoyed an outstanding campaign before
tearing thumb ligaments two days prior to the Freedom Conference playoffs
and missed all of the post-season for King's. Valonis batted .333 (33-99)
with six home runs, 11 doubles, two triples, 36 RBI, and scored 24 runs.
Manarchuck finished with a .327 (50-153)
batting average with 16 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 22 attempts. She was
also outstanding defensively, using her blazing speed and range to take
away numerous hits from opposing batters while also throwing out five
runners from her centerfield position.
