KING'S SOFTBALL TEAM ELIMINATED AT NCAA REGIONALS

SALISBURY, MD -- The King's College softball team saw its record-setting season come to an end Sunday as the Lady Monarchs dropped a 10-3 decision to Rutgers-Camden University at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals at Salisbury, Md.

With the loss, King's ended its season with a 39-10 mark, establishing a new single-season record for victories. Rutgers-Camden improved to 33-9 and handed King's both its losses in he double-elimination event. The Raptors had previously defeated King's 3-0 in a second-round pairing on Friday. Rutgers-Camden would later defeat Salisbury 1-0 to force a deciding championship game slated for Monday.

Facing one of the top pitchers in Division III in Rutgers-Camden's Michelle Schlichtig, King's needed to play a virtually flawless game. Unfortunately for the Lady Monarchs, the team uncharacteristically committed five errors which contributed greatly to the loss. King's pitchers Sarah Genewski and Nikki Kotula, who had been solid all-season, also struggled, combining to walk nine batters on the day.

The second inning proved costly to King's as the Raptors pushed across five runs thanks to three Lady Monarch errors. King's would scored three runs in third, thanks to a pair of Rutgers-Camden errors. Christen Piccola reached base on an error, followed by a walk to Kelley Vaxmonsky. Both Piccola and Vaxmonsky would score on a throwing error to first base following a bunt by Linda Manarchuck. Stacey Preambo then delivered an RBI single to bring home Manarchuck.

After Rutgers-Camden added an unearned run in the fifth inning, the Raptors put the game away with four runs in the sixth, aided by five walks, a pair of wild pitches, and just two hits.

Genewski led King's offensively with a 2-for-3 day at the plate but took the pitching loss. The Lady Monarch junior pitched two and two-thirds innings and allowed five unearned runs while striking out three batters. Kotula pitched four and one-third inning and yielded five runs, four which were earned.

Manarchuck, Preambo, Kotula, and Maria Zangardi all had one base hit for King's.

Schlichtig pitched five innings and allowed five hits while striking out six batters. Ashley O'Brien had three hits to pace the Raptors offense.
