KING’S SOFTBALL DROPS NCAA OPENER, 3-0

SALISBURY, MD – Autum Millett hit a three-run home run in the first inning for the only runs of the game as third-seeded Rutgers-Camden defeated second-seeded King’s College in the second round of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals Friday in Salisbury, Md.

Rutgers-Camden improved to 34-9 on the year while King’s slipped to 37-9.

In the top of the first inning, Stacy Haas reached base on an infield hit with one out before Becky Johnson drew a walk.  Millett then belted a three-run home run off of King’s starting pitcher Sarah Genewski for what proved to be the game-winning runs.

The Lady Monarchs managed just two hits off Rutgers-Camden pitching star Michelle Schlichtig who fanned 11 batters in seven innings.  Maria Zangardi and Kelley Vaxmonsky were the only King’s batters to post base hits.

Genewski took the loss in allowing all three runs and five hits in three and two-thirds innings.  Nikki Kotula pitched the final 3 and one-third innings and did not allow a base hit.

King’s will now face McDaniel College at 12:00 noon in a do-or-die game as the Lady Monarchs will look to remain alive in the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination event.
