KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS PAC CHAMPION CABRINI TO POST
NINTH STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASON
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team
improved to 20-4 on the year as the Lady Monarchs belted nine extra-base
hits in a doubleheader sweep of defending Pennsylvania Athletic Conference
champion Cabrini College Tuesday at Betzler Fields.
King's won the first game 8-4 before capturing the
nightcap 4-2. In the process, the Lady Monarchs have won at least 20 games
for the ninth straight season.
In the first game, King's trailed 3-2 in the fourth
before the Lady Monarchs would rally. Christen Piccola would reach base on
a fielder's choice and scored on a triple from Kelley Vaxmonsky. Linda
Manarchuck would deliver an RBI single and promptly stole second base.
Maria Zangardi drove in Manarchuck with a base hit to give King's a 5-3
lead.
King's added three more runs in the sixth when
Piccola walked and later scored on an RBI single from Zangardi. Stacey
Preambo would then follow with a two-run home run, her seventh of the
season, to put the Lady Monarchs on top 8-3.
Genewski picked up the pitching win, allowing eight
hits and four runs, two which were earned. Zangardi went 3-for-4 with two
RBI while Preambo was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
In the nightcap, the Lady Monarchs scored two runs
in the first inning when Vaxmonsky walked and scored on a Zangardi triple.
Preambo would then bring Zangardi home with an infield ground out.
After Cabrini scored a run in the third, the Lady
Monarchs answered when Manarchuck walked, stole second base, and scored on
a triple by Preambo.
Cabrini would score another run in the fifth, but
King's would again respond with a run of their own. Piccola would reach
base on an error and moved to second on a bunt from Vaxmonsky. Zangardi
would then deliver an RBI double to give the Lady Monarchs a 4-2 lead.
Megan Adams would pick up the win for King's,
allowing both runs and eight hits. Nikki Kotula registered the save,
tossing three scoreless innings and striking out five batters. Zangardi
was 2-for-3 with two RBI to pace King's offensively.
The Lady Monarchs will be idle until April 13 when
King's hosts Delaware Valley College at 3:00 p.m. at Betzler Fields
