KING'S SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH ELIZABETHTOWN
WILKES-BARRE -- Maria Zangardi delivered a one-out
run-scoring single in the sixth inning as the King's College softball
posted a 6-5 victory over Elizabethtown College as the Lady Monarchs
salvaged a doubleheader split Monday at Betzler Fields. Elizabethtown won
the first game 10-4
The Blue Jays forged a 5-5 tie with two runs in the
top half of the sixth inning. King's (16-4) quickly answer when Kelley
Vaxmonsky led off the bottom half of the inning with a double. Linda
Manarchuck's infield out would advance Vaxmonsky to third to set up
Zangardi's heroics. The Lady Monarch senior standout drilled a line drive
to the opposite field to plate Vaxmonsky with the go-ahead run. Umpires
would promptly call the game due to darkness.
Vaxmonsky was 2-for-4 and scored two runs in the
game while Sarah Genewski was 2-for-3 and drove in three runs. Genewski
was also the winning pitcher, allowing five runs, three which were earned
and struck out four batters while improving to 8-2.
In the first game, King's pitchers Megan Adams and
Nicole Conger combined to allow nine runs over the first four innings of
the game as the Lady Monarchs fell behind 9-4 and would never recover.
Manarchuck was 3-for-4 while Stacey Preambo went 2-for-3 with a double,
triple, and three RBI. Kristin Brady was also 2-for-4 for the Lady
Monarchs.
King's will next host Lycoming College in an
important Freedom Conference doubleheader Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Betzler
Field.
