KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS FDU IN CONFERENCE OPENERS

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team opened MAC Freedom Conference play in impressive fashion as the Lady Monarchs swept FDU Florham 5-0 and 9-1 in five innings Wednesday at Betzler Fields.

With the victories, the Lady Monarchs improved to 11-2 on the year

In the opener, King's rode the pitching of junior Sarah Genewski who tossed a two-hitter and struck out four batters in seven innings of work.

In the opener, King's took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Maria Zangardi drove in Kelley Vaxmonskey prior to Linda Manarchuck scoring on a wild pitch. The Lady Monarchs pushed across three more runs in the sixth Mari Valonis stroked a leadoff solo home run. Cassy Shiffer would double and score on a base hit from Vaxmonsky. Manarchuck would later drove in Vaxmonsky with the final run on an infield grounder. Vaxmonsky led King's with a 2-for-4 effort and scored two runs.

In the nightcap, King's pushed across two runs in the first when Vaxmonsky and Manarchuck singled and Zangardi was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Stacey Preambo drove in Vaxmonsky with an infield out while Manarchuck would come home on a ground ball from Kristin Brady. King's upped the lead to 3-0 when Vaxmonsky's RBI single drove in Shiffer.

After FDU scored its lone run of the day in the fourth, King's pushed across five runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Lady Monarchs would load the bases and Preambo drilled a towering grand slam home run. Brady would then triple and scored on a single from Valonis to push the score to 8-1. The Lady Monarchs ended the game on the eight-run rule in the sixth when Christen Piccola singled, moved to third, and scored on a wild pitch.

Megan Adams picked up the pitching win, allowing five hits and one run with one strikeout in five innings of work.

King's will travel to play Keystone College Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
