LADY MONARCHS FALL TO WILLIAM PATERSON IN NCAA CONSOLATIONS

CORTLAND, NY -- The King's College softball team saw its season come to an end in the consolation round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament as the Lady Monarchs dropped a 2-0 decision to William Paterson University Saturday at Cortland State University, Cortland, NY.

With the loss, King's, the MAC Freedom Conference champions, concluded their season with a 24-11 record. William Paterson, the New Jersey Athletic Conference champion, improved to 29-11-1 and advance to the second round of the consolation bracket.

William Paterson scored the first run of the game in the second inning when Mindy Coxe tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Patlin. The Pioneers added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Pam Migliacaccio singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Liz Carroll.

King's had a number of scoring chances but were unable to convert.

The Lady Monarchs missed out on a scoring opportunity in the first inning when Linda Manarchuck singled and stole second base. After advancing to second on an infield out by Marie Zangardi, Manarchuck was left stranded when Stacey Preambo grounded out to second base.

In the third inning, King's freshman Cassy Shiffer singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Manarchuk. But with two out, Jess Harvey grounded to second base to end the inning.

An inning later, Zangardi singled and moved to second on a bunt by Preambo. But the threat ended when Kristin Brady and Kim Roman both struck out as the score remained 1-0.

In the sixth inning, Manarchuck singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jess Harvey. Zangardi then drilled a long fly ball to the warning track, allowing Manarchuck to tag up and move to third with the potential game-tying run. The threat ended when Preambo grounded out to third base.

After Paterson scored their second run in the top half of the seventh inning, King's final chance came when Brady led off the inning with a walk. After Roman popped out and Shiffer grounded to shortstop, Christen Piccola reached base on an error, giving the Lady Monarchs runners at first and third with two out. The game ended when Katie Seguin struck out swinging as King's saw its season come to an abrupt end.

Manarchuk led King's offensively with a 2-for-2 effort while Zangardi and Shiffer also posted hits for King's. Sarah Genewski took the complete-game pitching loss for the Lady Monarchs, scattering 10 hits while allowing two earned runs.

Diane Catalano picked up the shutout win for William Paterson, tossing a four-hitter while striking out three batters. Maria Browne was 3-for-4 for the Pioneers while Morris added two hits.
