KING’S SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH DREW

WILKES-BARRE - The King’s College softball team split an important MAC Freedom Conference doubleheader with Drew University Thursday at Betzler Fields.

In a rematch of the 2002 Freedom Conference championship, King’s won the first game 1-0 in eight innings before Drew rallied to capture the nightcap 5-4.

In the opener, the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning. Christen Piccola would reach base on a two-out Ranger error and moved to third on an infield hit by Maria Zangardi. Stacey Preambo then drilled a line drive up the middle to score Piccola with the game-winning run.

Sarah Genewski picked up the win for King’s, pitching all eight innings and allowing just four base hits.

In the nightcap, King’s trailed 2-0 after one inning would cut into the margin when Katie Seguin singled and moved to second on a base hit by Linda Manarchuck. Jess Harvey then delivered a run scoring single to bring King’s to within 2-1. King’s would tie the score in the fifth inning when Maria Zangardi singled and would later score on an infield grounder from Kristin Brady.

The Lady Monarchs would surge ahead in the sixth inning when Harvey tripled and scored on a Piccola single. After Piccola was caught stealing, Zangardi doubled and would later score on a wild pitch as King’s took a 4-2 lead into the final frame.

Drew would counter when Liz Cozine singled, and Kristen Mignoli followed with an RBI double. Colleen Mahon’s run-scoring single tied the game at 4-4. The Rangers would push across the go-ahead run when Shanna Peras lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Mahon.

In King’s final at-bats, Cassy Shiffer would post a one-out double but the Lady Monarchs followed with a pair of infield outs to end the game.

King’s will host Wilkes Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in a Freedom Conference matchup at Betzler Fields.
