KING'S SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH DESALES
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team
split an MAC Freedom Conference doubleheader with DeSales University
Sunday at Betzler Fields.
King's won the first game 10-2 in six innings before
falling in the nightcap 5-3.
In the opener, the Lady Monarchs posted 14 base hits
on its way to victory. King's trailed 2-1 in the third inning when Katie
Seguin singled and Linda Manarchuck and Jess Harvey drew consecutive walks
to load the bases. After a force out at home, Stacey Preambo blasted a
three-run triple and scored on a throwing error to third base. After
Kristin Brady doubled, Christen Piccola followed with an RBI single to
give King's a 6-2 lead.
In the fourth inning, Manarchuck reached bas eon a
fielder's choice and scored on an opposite field double by Maria Zangardi.
Preambo would then follow with a run scoring single to push the score to
8-2
The Lady Monarchs added a run in the fifth when
Piccola doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an infield
grounder by Seguin. King's added the game-ending run in the sixth when
Zangardi was hit by a pitch, Brady singled, and Sarah Genewski reached
base on an infield base hit to load the bases. Piccola then singled to
bring home Zangardi with the final run of the contest.
Genewski picked up the win with a complete-game five
hitter. Preambo was 3-for-4 with five RBI while Piccola was also 3-for-4
with two RBI. Brady and Seguin added two hits each for King's while
Zangardi scored three runs.
In the nightcap, DeSales scored three unearned runs
in the first inning on the strength of a two-run single by Nicole Letinski.
King's countered in the bottom half of the inning when Harvey drilled a
solo home run over the centerfield fence to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Lady Monarchs added a run in the second inning
when Piccola walked and later scored on an RBI single from Manarchuck.
DeSales answered with two runs in the third inning
on RBI singles from Erin Martell and Shavonne Hannahoe.
King's would score its final run in the fourth
inning when Brady walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. After
Suzanne reached base on an error, moving Brady to third base, Piccola
followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-3. Neither team would
threaten for the remainder of the game as DeSales hung on to earn a the
split.
Lady Monarch sophomore Megan Adams (4-1) suffered
her first loss of the season, allowing all five runs, two which were
earned. Harvey and Piccola led King's with two hits each Manarchuck,
Zangardi, and Brady all singled for King's.
King's will close out the regular-season Monday when
the Lady Monarchs host Lebanon Valley at 3:30 p.m. at Betzler Fields.
King's will then host the MAC Freedom Conference
Championships Friday and Saturday, also at Betzler Fields
