KING'S SOFTBALL SWEPT BY LYCOMING, 1-0, 3-2
WILKES-BARRE -- In what was a battle for first place
in the MAC Freedom Conference, the King's College softball team dropped
both ends of a doubleheader to host Lycoming College Tuesday in
Williamsport. The Warriors won the first game 1-0 and the second game 3-2.
In the opener, Lycoming scored what proved to be the
game-winning run in the second inning when Amy Curry reached base on a
single and later scored another Lady Monarch error. Winning pitcher Amanda
Gery yielded just one hit, a third inning single by Linda Manarchuck,
while striking out 10 King's batters.
In the second game, the teams were tied 2-2 entering
the bottom half of the seventh inning when Lycoming pushed across the
winning run. Jessica Ferrarr and Curry hit back-to back singles before
Kate Kresge drove home the deciding run with a one-out single.
Lycoming took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when
Kresge singled and Miranda Newcomer and Megan Mantle drew consecutive
walks to load the bases. Marianne Simpson and Morgan Rudelich then drew
back-to-back walks to push across both runs.
King's knotted the score with two runs in the sixth
inning. Katie Seguin and would score on an RBI double from Christen
Piccola. Maria Zangardi would advance Piccola with a single before Stacey
Preambo followed with a run-scoring infield ground out.
The Lady Monarchs managed three hits in the second
game but Lycoming's Mantle posted nine strikeouts.
With the sweep, King's fell to 16-8 overall and 7-3
in the MAC Freedom Conference. Lycoming improved to 15-7-1 overall and 7-1
in conference.
