KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS DEL-VALLEY
DOYLESTOWN -- Three-time
defending Freedom Conference champion King's College racked up 20 hits as
the Lady Monarchs swept a doubleheader from host Delaware Valley College,
8-0 and 15-4, on Saturday afternoon. Both games were called after five
innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
The pair of victories upped King's
record to 11-5 overall and 4-0 in conference play while the Aggies fell to
5-3 and 0-2.
The first game saw Lady Monarch starter
Sarah Genewski (5-4) hold Delaware Valley to one hit - a bloop single into
right field by Alison Suttie in the third inning. Genewski walked two and
fanned two.
Linda Manarchuck put King's on the
scoreboard in the third as she tripled to right field and scored on an
overthrow on the play. The Lady Monarchs added another run in the inning
as Jess Harvey singled, stole second and came around to score on a
Christen Piccola single.
King's put the game by scoring six runs
in the fourth inning, all with two outs. With the bases loaded, Manarchuck
hit a grounder to second that was booted for an error. Harvey followed
with a two-run single and Piccola added an RBI single. Maria Zangardi made
it 8-0 with a two-run double.
The nightcap saw Delaware Valley take a
4-1 lead after one inning of play, before King's scored 14 unanswered runs
for the victory.
Down 1-0, the Aggies first four batters
racked up hits - two on bunts. Jackie Neil led off with a double and Beth
Sander and Katie Leach followed with back-to-back bunt singles to load the
bases. Wendy Strohl then knocked in a pair of runs with a single to right
field. Later in the inning, Casey Bidlingmaier and Tammy Banks produced
bases-loaded walks for a 4-1 advantage.
However, King's scored two runs in each
of the next three innings to take a 7-4 lead. The big blow was a two-run
homer over the left-center field fence by Kristin Brady in the third
inning. It was the second home run of the season for Brady and it gave the
Lady Monarchs a 5-4 advantage.
King's put the game away in the fifth
as it notched eight runs on three hits, six walks and one Aggie error.
Zangardi smacked a two-run homer for her third of the season and Piccola
had a two-run single in the inning.
Piccola and Zangardi had three RBIs
apiece in the game while Suzanne Smith improved to 3-0 on the mound.
Strohl went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for the Aggies.
