KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS SCRANTON

WILKES-BARRE -- Cassy Shiffer scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning on an arrant play to first-base, allowing the King's College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the University of Scranton Saturday at Betzler Fields.

With the teams tied at 8-8 entering the bottom half of the 10th, Shiffer reached base on a fielder's choice and moved to second on an infield out. With two out, King's Linda Manarchuck reached base on a bunt single but the throw to first-base was misplayed, allowing Shiffer to score from second base and give the lady Monarchs the sweep.

King's fell behind 2-0 in the third inning when Jen Wasilik stroked a two-run single. The Lady Monarchs answered in the bottom half of the inning when King's pushed across six runs. After the Lady Monarchs loaded the bases, Stacey Preambo delivered an RBI single. Suzanne Smith then drilled a three-run triple to right field to give King's a 4-2 advantage. Kristin Brady the lofted a sacrifice fly, followed by an RBI double by Elizabeth Stella.

Scranton added a run in the fourth when Kim Pregnar walked and later scored on an RBI double by Rebecca Devlin. King's would push across two more runs in the fifth when Maria Zangardi and Preambo both singled. Brady then delivered an RBI single to plate Zangardi before Katie Seguin's infield out brought home Preambo to increase the Lady Monarchs lead to 8-3

The Lady Royals rallied in the seventh on a two-run single by Wasilik, a two-run double from Jen Miller, and an RBI single from Devlin. King's failed to score in its final at-bats of regulation, sending the game into extra innings when Shiffer would score the winning run.

Jess Harvey led King's with a 3-for-5 effort while Smith was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Preambo was 2-for-5 with two RBI while Brady went 2-for-4. Sarah Genewski gained the pitching victory in relief for the Lady Monarchs

Scranton was led by Devlin with a 3-for-5 showing with two RBI. Wasilik was 2-for-4 with four RBI while Tracy Granozio was 2-for-5. Sarah Rhodes took the complete game pitching loss for Scranton

King's won the opening game by an 8-6 margin after scoring seven first-inning runs off Rhodes, who pitched both ends of the twinbill. Christen Piccola had a two-run double while Shiffer added a two-run triple to ignite the first inning assault.

Scranton scored in the fourth when Wasilik belted an opposite field solo home run to put the Lady Royals on the score board. King's added its final run in the fourth inning when Preambo tripled and scored on a single by Genewski

Scranton would add two more in the sixth when Granozio tripled, followed by a two-run home run by Wasilik, her second round-tripper of the game. The Lady Royals added three runs in the seventh inning when Devlin led off with a solo home run, Scranton's third home run of the game. Rhodes would later deliver a two-out, two-run single to bring the Lady Royals to within 8-6 before the rally ended.

Genewski went 3-for-4 at the plate while picking up the complete game pitching victory for King's. Preambo added two hits while scoring two runs.

Wasilik topped Scranton in the opener with a 2-for-3 showing including three RBI. Shalissa Dougherty and Granozio added two hits each for Scranton. Rhodes took the pitching loss for the Lady Royals.
