KING’S SOFTBALL ELIMINATED FROM NCAA
EAST REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS
(Lady Monarchs Conclude Their Second Winningest Season Ever)
ITHACA, NY -- The King’s College softball
team saw it season come to an end Saturday as the Lady Monarchs went 1-1
on the second day of the NCAA East Regional Championships at Ithaca
College.
King’s concluded the double-elimination
tournament with a 2-2 record and finished in third place in the regional.
The Lady Monarchs ended their outstanding season at 36-10-1 and produced
the second highest victory total in the program’s history. The 2000 team
was 38-6.
In the first game, King’s defeated
Manhattanville 1-0, but was eliminated by top-seeded Geneseo State 1-0 in
the next game. Geneseo advanced out of the loser’s bracket into Sunday’s
championship game against second-seeded Ithaca, which was 2-0 and owned as
first-round 2-0 win over King’s on Friday.
In the first game, Christen Piccola scored
the game winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the seventh
inning as the King’s survived a scare from fourth seeded Manhattanville.
Sarah Genewski started off the inning for
King’s by reaching first base on an error and Piccola entered the game
as pinch runner. Kim Ball then moved Piccola to second on a bunt, followed
by another bunt by Linda Manarchuck which advanced the Lady Monarch
sophomore to third base. On the second pitch, Manhattanville pitcher
Candice D’Andrea’s offering sailed over the head of
catcher Lu Bono, allowing Piccola to scored
the deciding run.
Offensively, King’s managed just four
hits but Lady Monarch hurler Karen Ball tossed a three-hitter to pick up
the complete game victory
In the second game, Geneseo (36-5) broke
open a scoreless game with a run in the sixth inning when Jill
Almansberger drew a walk and moved to second on a
bunt by Katie Hovey. After a pop out, Jen
Seitter delivered an RBI double to bring home Almansberger with what
proved to be the winning run
King’s missed out on a chance in the
first inning when Michele Dlugosz singled and moved to second on a bunt by
Lisa Rizzo. But winning pitcher Sarah Taub struck out the next two batter
to pitch out of the jam.
In the second inning, King’s stranded
another runner when Genewski singled with two outs by Taub struck out
Christen Piccola to end the inning.
The Lady Monarchs missed out on another
opportunity in the fifth when Genewski and Manarchuck with two outs, but
Michele Dlugosz grounded to second to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, King’s had
its final chance when Jess Harvey singled with two outs but Stacey Preambo
flied out to first base to end the frame.
In its final at-bat Taub retired the Lady
Monarchs in order to improve her season log to 21-3. The Geneseo junior
struck out nine batters and allowed five King’s hits in picking up the
win.
Genewski led King’s with two hits
offensively and tossed a strong complete-game five-hitter in a losing
effort.
