SCRANTON UPENDS TOP-SEEDED DREW TO MOVE
ON TO SECOND ROUND OF MAC FREEDOM CHAMPIONSHIPS
WILKES-BARRE -- In the first game of the
2002 MAC Freedom Conference
Softball
Championships, fourth-seeded Scranton knocked off top-seeded Drew
9-0 in six innings.
The Lady Royals got off to a quick 1-0 lead in the first
inning when Shalissa Dougherty singled and scored on a double by Megan
Wasilik. The Lady Royals added
four runs in the third when Kim Pregnar and Rebecca
Devlin both walked and pitcher Sarah Rhodes singled to load the
bases. Kelly Gaynor the walked
to force in a run before Dougherty drilled as triple
to right centerfield.
The Lady Royals put the game away in the
sixth when Jennifer Miller reached
base
on a two-out error, followed by a single by pinch hitter Jessica Petti.
Devlin then came through with
an RBI single to push the Scranton lead to 6-0.
Rhodes then helped her own cause with a three-run home run to left
field to up the Scranton
advantage to 9-0.
Rhodes was outstanding in the circle for
the Lady Royals, in tossing a
three-hitter
while striking out five batters. Drew starter tara Duffy took
the loss in allowing five runs,
all earned, in 2.1 innings of work before Erica
Mehalick tossed the final 3.2 innings for the Rangers.
With the win, Scranton improved to 14-18
overall and advanced to the MAC
Freedom
second-round where it faces second-seeded two-time defending champion
King's, which earned a 2-1 eight inning win over Lycoming in the
first round.
Drew slipped to 25-13 and must now battle
back from the loser's bracket in
the
double-elimination event against third-seeded Lycoming.
