KING'S SOFTBALL DROPS PAIR OF ONE RUN
HEARTBREAKERS TO CABRINI
WILKES-BARRE -- In a battle of two of the top
programs in the Mid-Atlantic
Region,
the King's College softball team dropped a doubleheader Tuesday to
Cabrini College. The Lady Monarchs
suffered a pair of heartbreaking one-run defeats,
falling 1-0 in the first game and 2-1 in the nightcap.
The first game featured a pitcher's dual between
King's ace Karen Ball and
Cabrini
standout Meg Johnson who stands as one of the nation's top hurlers
with a 0.15 earned run average.
Cabrini would score the only run of the game in the
fourth inning when Rita
Horning
and Heather Tu both singled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt
by Brooke Peterdozzi. Shannon Murphy then
lofted a sacrifice fly to centerfield
to bring home Horning with what proved to be the winning run.
King's has an opportunity in the fifth inning with
runners at first and
second
with one one but Michele Dlugosz's potential game-tying line drive
was snared by Johnson and turned into an
inning-ending double play. The Lady
Monarchs had another scoring chance in the seventh when Jess Harvey
belted a two-out triple, but Stacey
Preambo grounded to second to end the game.
Johnson allowed just four King's hits while Ball
countered with a
four-hitter
as well.
In the nightcap, the game remained scoreless until
the sixth inning when
Harvey
drilled a solo home run, her ninth of the season, deep over the left
field fence. Cabrini, however, would
rally in the seventh. With two outs and
runners at second and third, pinch hitter Jen Beam, smacked a single up
the middle to score both runners and
give the Cavaliers the lead. King's would
go down in order in their final at-bats as Cabrini earned the sweep.
With the loss, King's fell to 31-8-1 while Cabrini
improved to 33-6. The
Lady Monarchs will host the MAC Freedom Conference
softball Championships
Friday
and Saturday at Betzler Fields. Drew will meet Scranton Friday at
11:00 a.m. with King's battling Lycoming
at 1:00 p.m.
