KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS FDU-MADISON, 11-0 AND 9-0 TO IMPROVE TO 22-5-1

WILKES-BARRE --  King's College pitchers Karen Ball and Sarah Genewski each tossed three-hit shutouts to propel the Lady Monarch softball team to a doubleheader sweep of visiting FDU-Madison Saturday at Robert L. Betzler Fields, Wilkes-Barre.

King's won the first game 11-0 in five innings before capturing the nightcap 9-0 in five innings. With the sweep, King's improved to 22-5-1 overall and 6-2 in MAC Freedom Conference action.  FDU-Madison fell to 9-17 and 4-10 in conference action.

In the opener, King's took a 1-0 first inning lead when Lisa Rizzo walked and later scored on a RBI single by Jess Harvey.  The Lady Monarchs would then explode for seven runs in the second inning when Christen Piccola was hit by a pitch and Kim Ball and Linda Manarchuk had consecutive singles to load the bases.

King's would then add two runs on an FDU error before Rizzo drove in another with a singe to push the score to 5-0. After Maria Zangardi reached base on an error to bring home two more runs, Harvey then drilled an RBI triple to plate Zangardi and would eventually score on a passed ball.

The Lady Monarchs added three more runs in the third inning when Manarchuk tripled and scored on an infield grounder by Michele Dlugosz. After Zangardi reached on an error to score Manarchuck, Harvey drilled a towering two-run home run deep over the left centerfield fence to give King's an 11-0 advantage.

Harvey led the King's assault with a 3-for-3 showing, including four RBI, while Manarchuk was 2-for-3 and scored two runs.  Karen Ball tossed a three-hit shutout to pick up the pitching victory for King's.

Cortney Veres had a double while Lillian Hine, and Meredith Thompson hit singles for FDU.

In the nightcap, King's took a 3-0 first inning lead when Dlugosz singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Zangardi.  After three consecutive walks loaded the bases, King's starting pitcher Sarah Genewski helped her own cause with a two-run single up the middle.

The Lady Monarchs added three more runs in the second when Manarchuk singled and Dlugosz walked.  Both runners advanced on a double steal before Manarchuck scored on a passed ball. After a walk to Rizzo, Zangardi lofted another sacrifice fly to bring home Dlugosz with the second run of the inning. Two batters later, Stacey Preambo drove in Rizzo with an infield ground out to give King's a 6-0 lead.

The Lady Monarchs would close out the game with a three-run fourth inning when Zangardi, Harvey, and Preambo drew consecutive walks to load the bases.  Zangardi would score on another passed ball before Harvey and Preambo would come home on another FDU error.

Genewski led King's with a 2-for-3 hitting effort while also earning the pitching victory with a three-hitter.
Danielle Curcio, Alexis Lanuk, and Dana Meade all had singles for FDU.

King's hosts Baptist Bible Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., then travels to Scranton Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in a make-up game from earlier in the season.
