WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team continued to roll as the Lady Monarchs improved to 19-2-1 on the year with a doubleheader sweep of arch-rival Wilkes University Saturday at Kirby Park.

Sophomore Maria Zangardi was the hitting star for King's as she went 7-for-8 with six RBI and hit two home runs.

The Lady Monarchs won the first game 6-3 before capturing the nightcap 11-2 as the eight run mercy rule was invoked after five innings.  In the process, King's improved to 4-0 in MAC Freedom Conference action while putting King's ahead 13-1 in the Times Leader Mayor's Cup standings

In the opener, King's broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the fifth.  The big blow came on a three-run double by Suzanne Smith while Jess Harvey also added an RBI single.  After Wilkes cut the lead to 4-3, the Lady Monarchs added a run in the sixth when Kim Ball singled and scored on an error.  King's added its final run in the seventh when Harvey reached base on a fielders' choice, stole second base, and later scored on a single by Smith.

Karen Ball picked up the pitching win in scattering nine base hits.  Lisa Hartman took the loss in yielding six runs, three which were earned, as well as 11 base hits.

In the nightcap, Zangardi was outstanding with a 4-for-4 effort and drilled two home runs and a double while driving in six runs.  With the teams tied 1-1 in the second, Lisa Rizzo singled home a Kim Ball before Zangardi belted a three-run home run to give the Lady Monarchs a 5-1 lead.

King's added three more runs in the fourth when Rizzo singled and Zangardi followed with a two-run blast. Harvey then delivered an RBI double to give the Lady Monarchs a 8-1 advantage. King's tacked on three more runs in the fifth   when Dlugosz reached base on a fielder's choice, stole second base, then scored on a single by Rizzo.  Zangardi then doubled in Rizzo before Harvey lofted a sacrifice fly.  Suzanne Smith drove in King's final run with a single to push the score to 11-1.

Freshman Sarah Genewski tossed a complete game four-hitter to improve to 7-0 while allowing her first earned run of the season in Wilkes- final at-bats.  Hartman suffered the loss in the second game in allowing 15 hits and 10 earned runs.
