ZANGARDI DRILLS TWO HOME RUNS IN NIGHTCAP AS KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS
WILKES IN MAYOR'S CUP BATTLE
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team continued to roll as the
Lady Monarchs improved to 19-2-1 on the year with a doubleheader sweep of
arch-rival Wilkes University Saturday at Kirby Park.
Sophomore Maria Zangardi was the hitting star for King's as she went
7-for-8 with six RBI and hit two home runs.
The Lady Monarchs won the first game 6-3 before capturing the nightcap
11-2 as the eight run mercy rule was invoked after five innings. In
the process, King's improved to 4-0 in MAC Freedom Conference action while
putting King's ahead 13-1 in the Times Leader Mayor's Cup standings
In the opener, King's broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the
fifth. The big blow came on a three-run double by Suzanne Smith
while Jess Harvey also added an RBI single. After Wilkes cut the
lead to 4-3, the Lady Monarchs added a run in the sixth when Kim Ball
singled and scored on an error. King's added its final run in the
seventh when Harvey reached base on a fielders' choice, stole second base,
and later scored on a single by Smith.
Karen Ball picked up the pitching win in scattering nine base hits. Lisa
Hartman took the loss in yielding six runs, three which were earned, as
well as 11 base hits.
In the nightcap, Zangardi was outstanding with a 4-for-4 effort and
drilled two home runs and a double while driving in six runs. With
the teams tied 1-1 in the second, Lisa Rizzo singled home a Kim Ball
before Zangardi belted a three-run home run to give the Lady Monarchs a
5-1 lead.
King's added three more runs in the fourth when Rizzo singled and Zangardi
followed with a two-run blast. Harvey then delivered an RBI double to give
the Lady Monarchs a 8-1 advantage. King's tacked on three more runs in the
fifth when Dlugosz reached base on a fielder's choice, stole
second base, then scored on a single by Rizzo. Zangardi then doubled
in Rizzo before Harvey lofted a sacrifice fly. Suzanne Smith drove
in King's final run with a single to push the score to 11-1.
Freshman Sarah Genewski tossed a complete game four-hitter to improve to
7-0 while allowing her first earned run of the season in Wilkes- final
at-bats. Hartman suffered the loss in the second game in allowing 15
hits and 10 earned runs.
On the day, Harvey was 5-for-7 with two RBI. Rizzo was 4-for-8 with two
RBI and scored four runs while Linda Manarchuck was also 4-for-5.
