KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS MARYWOOD TO IMPROVE TO
13-2-1
WILKES-BARRE -- Karen Ball tossed a two-hitter and
Sarah Genewski followed
with
a four hitter to lead the Kingšs College softball team to a
doubleheader sweep
over Marywood University Saturday at Betzler Fields.
King's won the first game 15-0 in five innings,
the followed up with an 8-0
triumph
in five innings to gain the sweep. In the process, the Lady Monarchs
improved to 13-2-1 while the Pacers
fell to 1-13.
In the opener, King's capitalized on two Marywood
errors to take a 3-0 first
inning
lead, keyed by a two-run single by Maria Zangardi. The Lady Monarchs
added three more in the second inning
when Linda Manarchuck walked, stole second,
and scored on a Lisa Rizzo single. King's Jess Harvey then hit a
towering two-run home run over the
left centerfield fence to push the score to
5-0.
King's would tack on four more runs in the third
when Sara Genewski walked
followed
by a two-out single by Manarchuck. Michele Dlugosz would then
deliver a two-run double and scored on
a single by Rizzo who would steal second
and eventually score on a hit by Zangardi to build a 10-0 lead.
The Lady Monarchs would put the game away with
five runs in the fifth.
Stacey
Preambo would lead off the inning with
a solo home run, before Katie Seguin would
triple and score on a throwing error to extend the margin to 12-0.
King's would add three more unearned runs in the
inning
Ball, meanwhile
was dominant on the mound, holding the Pacers hitless until
the fourth inning when Kim Cure hit a
one-out single for Marywood. Emmy Lou Stein
felt added a fifth inning single for the Pacers only hits. Ball
posted five
strikeouts in gaining the pitching victory.
In the nightcap, King's held a slim 1-0 lead after
three innings then blew
the
game open with a six-run fourth. Genewski reached base on an error and
moved to second on a bunt. After
consecutive walks, Dlugosz ripped a two-run
single to up the lead to 3-0. Rizzo
followed with a run-scoring single before
Zangardi added a RBI triple. Harvey stroked a two-run single to push
the lead to 7-0. King's would then end
the game in the fifth inning when Christen
Piccola drove in Preambo with a single.
Kristin Jeryga, Kathi Rattigan, Steinfelt and
Marissa Coccia had singles for
the
Pacers.
King's will host Delaware Valley Wednesday in an
MAC Freedom double-header
at
2:30 p.m.
