KING'S OPENS UP WITH TWO WINS AT SALISBURY TOURNEY
SALISBURY, MD -- The King's College softball team won its first two games
at the Salisbury University Invitational Tournament in Salisbury, Md.
In their first game, King's defeated Mary Washington 9-0 in five innings
before besting Bridgewater 8-0 in five innings. The Lady Monarchs
improved to 10-1-1 on the season.
In the opener, King's took a 1-0 first inning lead when Michele Dlugosz
singled and would later score on an infield grounder by Maria Zangardi.
The Lady Monarchs added three runs in the second inning when Suzanne Smith
singled and Katie Seguin walked. After both runners advanced on an error,
Sarah Genewski stroked a two-run single. Linda Manarchuck would
later single to bring home Genewski and give King's a 4-0 lead.
The Lady Monarchs put the game away with a five-run fifth inning when
Smith walked, Kim Ball singled, and Katie Seguin reached first on an
infield single to load the bases. Manarchuck would walk to bring home one
run before Dlugosz doubled home three more runs. Lisa Rizzo would then
drive in Dlugosz with the game's final run.
Dlugosz was 2-for-4 with three RBI and score two runs. Genewski, who
had two hits and a pair of RBI, picked up the pitching win with a six-hit
shutout.
In the second game, King's took a 2-0 first inning lead when Dlugosz
walked and stole second base before Rizzo reached first on an error.
After Maria Zangardi was walked to load the bases, Jess Harvey
followed with an RBI single before Smith walked.
King's added three runs in the second when Genewski reached base on an
error , Manarchuck walked and Dlugosz delivered an RBI single. After
a walk to Rizzo, Zangardi belted a two-run double. The Lady Monarchs added
a pair of runs in the fourth on a two-run single by Smith to push the
score to 7-0. King's then closed out the scoring in the fifth when
Rizzo singled home Dlugosz with two outs to end the game.
Dlugosz was 2-for-2 and scored two runs while Zangardi was 2-for-2 with a
pair of RBI. Harvey also added two hits for the Lady Monarchs. Karen
Ball picked up the pitching win, allowing five hits and striking out two
batters.
