KING'S GAINS WIN OVER SUSQUUEHANNA, SETTLE FOR TIE IN NIGHTCAP
(Ball Sets career strikeout mark)
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team won the first game of
its scheduled doubleheader with Susquehanna University 3-2, then rallied
to forge a 3-3 tie in the nightcap which was halted after five innings
due to darkness.
In the opener, King's took a 2-0 first inning lead when Kim Ball came
through with a two-run single. Susquehanna cut the lead to 2-1
with a run in the second inning when Melissa Bird scored on a throwing
error. The Crusaders knotted the score at 2-2 in their seventh
inning when Teresa Ely doubled and scored on a single by Erin Nittinger.
The teams entered extra innings and the international speed-up rule was
utilized in which the last batter out in the previous inning begins the
following inning on second base. The teams were unable to score
until the bottom of the 10th inning when Jess Harvey doubled in Maria
Zangardi from second base with the game-winning run.
Karen Ball picked up the win for the Lady Monarchs, allowing six hits
while striking out two batters. In the process, Ball became King's
all-time career strikeout leader with 149, surpassing the previous mark
of 148 set by Julie Smith.
In the second game, King's trailed 3-0 entering the fourth inning when
Katie Seguin singled and moved to second on an infield out. After
consecutive walks to Linda Manarchuck and Michele Dlugosz loaded the
bases, Lisa Rizzo lofted a sacrifice fly to cut the score to 3-1. Zangardi
then followed with an RBI single to tie the score.
In the bottom-of-the-fifth inning, pinch hitter Stacey Preambo led off
the inning with a triple right field and scored the game-tying run
when the throw to third base was errant, allowing the Lady Monarch
freshman to score. The game was called due to darkness at the conclusion
of the inning.
King's improved to 8-1-1 while Susquehanna stands at 5-4-1.
