KING'S SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH DELAWARE VALLEY
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team split a Freedom Conference doubleheader with Delaware Valley College Saturday at Betzler Fields.
King's won the first game 5-1 but dropped the nightcap 7-6. With the split the Lady Monarchs now stand at 16-8 overall and 6-4 in league play. Delaware Valley ended the day at 9-17 and 5-5.
In the opener, King's took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Lauren DeCreny doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelsey Shreaves. The Lady Monarchs added another run in the third when Abbey Knoblauch walked and later scored on an error.
After Delaware Valley scored one run in the fifth, King's closed the door with three runs in the sixth, keyed by a base hit from Annie Drimones, an RBI single by Becky Loring, and a two-run double from Shreaves.
Meaghan Galvin topped King's with a 2-for-3 effort while Shreaves went 1-for-2 with three RBI. Shreaves was also the winning pitcher, scattering six hits and allowing just one run.
In the nightcap King's took a 3-2 first inning lead when Drimones and Leanne Harvey both walked and Lindsey Hoerner drilled a home run over the right centerfield fence.
After the teams traded runs in the third, the Lady Monarchs took a 5-3 lead in the fifth when Galvin walked and later scored on an Aggie error.
Delaware Valley fought back in the sixth when pinch hitter Jennifer Bummer hit a three-run home run to give the Aggies a 6-5 lead
The Lady Monarchs would answer when Drimones walked, stole second, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Loring to knot the score at 6-6.
But in the seventh, Kelly Andrews singled and moved to third on double by Nicole Dorney. Brittany Stockert would then single home what proved to be the winning run.
King's managed just four hits in the game but was able to manufacture runs thanks in part to nine walks issued by Aggie pitching. Hoerner was 1-for-2 with three RBI on her third home run of the year. Harvey, Katie Fry, and Julie Bidwell had the other hits for the lady Monarchs.
Hoerner took the pitching loss for King's, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits and struck out three batters.
