KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS BBC
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team
improved to 9-3 on the year as the lady Monarchs posted a doubleheader
sweep over visiting Baptist Bible College Thursday at Betzler Fields.
King's won the first game 2-0 before taking the nightcap 5-2.
In the opener, the Lady Monarchs rode the arm of junior pitcher Kelsey
Shreaves who tossed a complete-game three-hitter while striking out
seven batters to pick up the victory. King's took a 1-0 lead in the
third when Sue Roccia doubled and scored on an error following a base
hit to left field by Abbey Knoblauch.
The Lady Monarchs added a run the next inning when Shreaves doubled to
right field and later scored from third base on a single by Sue Roccia.
Roccia was 2-for-2 at the plate while Shreaves aided her own cause with
a 2-for-3 showing . Shreaves was also outstanding in the circle,
allowing only three balls to reach the infield. Of Baptist Bible's three
base hits, two were infield singles.
Renne Korb, Liz Tomasetti, and Jenn Hoag had the lone base hits for
Baptist Bible. Tomasetti took the pitching loss, allowing two runs, one
earned, on seven hits and struck out five batters.
In the second game, King's broke open a scoreless game in the fourth
inning when winning pitcher Lindsey Hoerner drilled a home run over the
left centerfield fence. The Lady Monarchs would pad their lead with four
runs in the fifth inning. Three straight singles by Lauren DeCreny,
Annie Drimones, and Leanne Harvey would load the bases before Meaghan
Galvin stroked a two-run double down the left field line. A
fter Gretchen Tholen reached base on a fielder's choice, Christie
Parfitt would deliver a two-run double to push the King's advantage to
5-0.
Baptist Bible would score its first run of the day when King's relief
pitcher Jacquie O'Brien issued a bases loaded walk. Hoerner would
reenter the game and promptly induced a double-play ground out to end
the inning.
In the seventh, Baptist Bible would attempt to capitalize on two King's
fielding errors and pushed across an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by
Heather Stamper but the Defenders would draw no closer.
Harvey led the King's attack by going 3-for-3 while Drimones was
2-for-4. Parfitt was 1-for-2 with two RBI while Galvin finished 1-for-3
with a pair of RBI. Hoerner improved to 5-1 on the year, allowing just
two hits in six and two-third innings while striking out six batters.
Korb, Holly Walton, and Katy Hullins each had singles for the Defenders.
