The mathematics major walks in the footsteps of giants. Some of the greatest minds in history have been captivated by the beauty and challenge of mathematics. Euler, Newton, Galois, Cauchy, Gauss, Laplace, Fermat, Lagrange, and Euclid are but a few of the names encountered by scholars in this field.
Beyond the challenge and excitement of working in such a magnificent discipline, another compelling reason exists for majoring in mathematics. It may well be the most versatile of all majors when it comes to preparing students for the job market. However, as noted by the Board on Mathematical Sciences of the National Research Council, "The rate in which young people enter the mathematical sciences remains inadequate to renew the field." Thus, career opportunities remain plentiful for college mathematics majors.
