POSITION: Laboratory Support
Technician

REPORTS TO: Biology
Laboratory Director
JOB FUNCTION:
Responsible for providing
scientific laboratory duties including: daily preparation of solutions, media,
equipment and supply set-up for biology-related laboratories and as necessary,
faculty/student research. Operates and maintains modern equipment and computer
technology related to the laboratories and Department classrooms. Assists Biology Laboratory Director in
supporting the needs of the Department.
ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:
1. Read lab protocols in order
to anticipate ordering needs, equipment needs and set timeline for lab
preparation.
2. Calculate mathematical computations required to
prepare solutions and media for laboratory use.
3. Organize, plan and prioritize preparation and allocation
of solutions, other laboratory chemicals and/or media for student use during
lab sessions and, as needed, similar duties for faculty/student research
laboratories.
4. Organize, set-up and remove after use, all supplies
and other lab equipment/instrumentation for all laboratories
and, as needed, similar duties
for faculty/student research laboratories.
5. Attend weekly lab meetings
with faculty for labs with multiple sections.
6. Responsible for maintaining supplies on lab benches
and distilled water supply system.
7. Assist faculty and students during lab sessions as
necessary.
8. Perform chemical/equipment inventories in consultation
with Laboratory Director.
9. Responsible for maintaining plants and other living
organisms for use during lab/research sessions.
10. Responsible for maintaining greenhouse and adjoining
laboratory.
11. Guide and manage student aides assigned to work in the
laboratory areas.
12. Maintain and update computers located within the
Biology Department laboratories and classrooms and the 20 laptop
computer
room in cooperation with IITS Services, troubleshoot and install scientific
software as necessary.
13. Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot as necessary,
laboratory equipment on a regular basis.
14. Manage and coordinate collection, storage and
arrangement for disposal of Chemical and Biohazard waste as per OSHA guidelines
for the College-wide Waste Management Program in consultation with the
Laboratory Director and Facilities.
15. Appropriate use and management of a personal King’s
College email account and the Biology email account.
16. Use and management of a personal King’s College Web
Advisor account.
17. Proficient and professional
use of the college’s telephone system.
18. Basic Microsoft Office
Utilization, (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
NON-ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:
1. Office functions when necessary; including word
processing, copying, scanning, faxing for faculty, students and staff.
2. Greet and assist visitors to the Department.
3. Assist in set-ups for pre-professional recruiters
meeting with faculty and students.
4. Assist with student safety forums each semester in
conjunction with Laboratory Director.
5. Assist with workshops, meetings, and presentations
associated with Science Departments.
6.
Assist with College functions relating to the Biology Department such as Open
Houses, Life Science Day.
7. Perform any additional related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND
TRAINING:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Biology
or related subject required.
2. Must be familiar with
materials, equipment and techniques used in modern Biology laboratories.
3. Ability to operate
laboratory equipment.
4. Strong communication,
organizational, interpersonal and multi-tasking skills required.
5. Strong problem assessment
and solving ability.
6. Strong mathematical skills
for calculations relating to chemical solution preparation.
7 Proven ability
to work independently and responsibly and be proactive relative to department
needs.
8. Proven ability to work with
various species of living organisms.
9. Ability to lift
approximately 50-60 lbs. on a regular basis and bend, stoop and reach.
10. Must have valid PA driver's
license with no moving violations.
11.Must have good working
knowledge of computers to assist with office and scientific programs.
12. OSHA mandated trainings
required annually: Universal Waste, Hazardous Waste Management, Chemical
Hygiene, Blood Borne Pathogen, Safety Committee.
13. Biohazard Waste Training is
required and will be provided as necessary.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Academic scientific laboratory
setting. Ability to work
independently. Ability to walk, stand,
bend, lift, reach for periods of time.
Personal protective equipment required as per specific scientific tasks
performed. Interaction with a wide
variety of College personnel: faculty, administration, staff, facilities, IITS,
other academic departments and students.
