POSITION:                                         Learning Disability Coordinator

 

CLASSIFICATION:                           Exempt; Full-Time (10 month)

 

DEPARTMENT:                                Academic Skills Center

 

REPORTS TO:                                   Associate Vice-President for

                                                            Enrollment and Academic Services

 

JOB FUNCTION:      

Provides direct academic advising, learning/study skills training, and overall assistance in the transition to college for students with learning disabilities in the First-year Academic Studies Program.

 

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

 

  1. Confers with the Disability Services Coordinator and the Director of Admissions in formulating admissions decisions for the First Year Academic Studies Program (FASP).
  2. Consults with the Tutorial Coordinator on the best approach for peer-based academic assistance for FASP students.
  3. Plans and implements the Orientation Session for students in the First Year Academic Studies Program.
  4. Creates course schedules for students in the FASP during freshman summer advisement
  5. Serves as academic advisor to students in FAS Program
  6. Completes an initial needs assessment for students in the FAS Program
  7. Consults on a regular basis with faculty teaching “fourth hour” sessions
  8. Consults with parents of FASP students throughout the first year
  9. Meets with FASP students to monitor academic progress, make specific academic recommendations (i.e., course tutoring), implement accommodations, and teach learning strategies.  Meetings will be three times a week through the fall semester; one to two times in the spring semester
  10. Coordinates services and meets regularly with FASP students enrolled in the summer College Entry Program
  11. Plans and coordinates accommodations (i.e., tape-recorders, note-takers, alternative format text ) for FASP students
  12. Coordinates with faculty the testing accommodations (i.e., untimed, computer-assisted, and other appropriate accommodations) for FASP students
  13. Acts as a resource to faculty in implementing accommodations for FASP students
  14. Advises tutors, in coordination with the Tutorial Coordinator, assigned to tutor  students with learning disabilities,  on appropriate approach to tutoring sessions
  15. Develops programming with Disability Services Coordinator for faculty training
  16. Serves, as needed, as test proctor and facilitator for students require extended and/or alternative testing
  17. Coordinates the reproduction of alternative format text for students in FASP
  18. Assists in the day-to-day management of the Academic Skills Center

 

NON-ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS

 

1.     Represents the FAS Program at Open House Programs, College Fairs, and professional organizations

2.     Develops new techniques/programs to meet the needs of FASP

3.     Provides information on issues of learning disabilities to professional staff

4.     Performs other related duties as assigned

 

REQUIRE SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING

 

A Master’s degree in Education or related field.  Demonstrated knowledge of the current theory and practice in the field of learning disabilities. Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse populations. Demonstrated administrative skills.
