Title:                International Student Counselor

Division:          Enrollment Management

Reports to:        Director of International Student Recruitment

Classification: 12 month, Exempt

Overall Functions:  The International Student Counselor performs a broad range of responsibilities to meet the needs of the international students including advisement of non-academic issues, and serves as a designated school official (DSO) for the SEVIS immigration process for international students. The International Student Counselor is also responsible for helping with adjustment to college issues and for post-graduation activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

1.       Responsible for the development of a community that promotes caring, support, challenges and responsibility that is consistent with the mission of the College, educational tradition of the Congregation of Holy Cross and its Catholic identity.

2.       Advise international students on visa documentation, explains immigration compliance requirement, maintains records in the SEVIS, and cross-cultural and personal adjustment matter.

3.       Plan and coordinate a variety of academic, cultural and social programs in collaboration with the Multicultural Student Programs and Campus Activities Offices.

4.       Coordinate and carry out an orientation program for new international students each semester in conjunction with the College’s New Student Orientation program and other College departments.

5.       Keep updated on SEVIS compliance and policies and serve as a resource for the campus community on policies and issues pertaining to international students.

6.       Work closely with the Dean of Students, Director of Academic Skills Center, International Student Academic Advisor, and the Associate Vice President for Student Success and Retention on facilitating student’s use of academic support programs.

7.       Monitor student academic and co-curricular progress and develop strategies for students for success.

8.       Develop and provide to the student, resource information about the College, College policies including but not limited to registration, drop/adding of classes, withdrawal, Student Code of Conducts and other polices.

9.       Participate in the Summer Orientation/Advisement program, Campus Activities, Multicultural and International Student Programs, Residence Life, Care Team, Enrollment Management Team and Student Affairs Team.

10.   Co-Teach a section(s) of CORE 090 the First Year Experience each semester as assigned by the Director of CORE 090.

11.   Develop and conduct assessment on International students’ experience and develop plans for improvement of the program.

12.   Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1.       Bachelor’s degree required.

2.       Experience working with international students.

3.       Experience working with and/or ability to learn and carry out functions related to SEVIS.

4.       Strong interpersonal communication skills and excellent organizational and detailed-oriented skills.

5.       Must be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident in order to serve as DSO.

6.       Ability to drive College vehicles.

7.       Proficient on the use of Microsoft WORD, Excel, PowerPoint and related products.  Ability to learn College administrative computing systems (Elucian, Moodle, Webadvisor).

8.       Obtain clearance from the Department of Homeland Security and serve as a designated school official for SEVIS.

9.       Pass clearances required by the College, including background checks (including but not limited to Child Abuse, Pennsylvania Crime Check, FBI clearances and PA driving records)

10.   Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualification

1.       Master’s degree in Education, International Studies or related field.

2.       Minimum of one year of experience working as a DSO with student or scholar visa regulations.

3.       Overseas study or living experience.

4.       Proficiency in a second language.
