Overall Functions: The
International Student Advisor performs a broad range of responsibilities to
meet the needs of the International Student Program including academic and
non-academic advisement, serves as a designated school official (DSO) for the
SEVIS immigration process for matriculated students at the College, helping
with adjustment to college issues and for post-graduation activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
2. Coordinate and carry out an orientation
program for new international students each semester in conjunction with the
College’s New Student Orientation program and other College departments.
3. Serve as the academic advisor to first year
and undeclared international undergraduate students under the supervision of
the Director of Academic Advisement. Be
knowledgeable of academic programs planners, registration, class/drop add and other
college policies.
4. Monitor student academic and co-curricular
progress and develop strategies for students for success.
5. Assist in coordinating of academic testing
needs for initial academic placement and academic department skills testing.
6. Coordinate the English as a Second Language
(ESL) instruction program for international students including assigning
students to the class and following up with instructors on attendance and
student progress.
7. Work closely with the Director of Academic
Skills Center, Director of Academic Advising and the Associate Vice President
for Student Success and Retention on facilitating student’s use of academic
support programs.
8. Serve as a designated school official (DSO)
for SEVIS. Complete and track required
verifications and functions for matriculated international students in the
SEVIS system including semester verifications, practical training, family
visas, students transferring from the College, etc.
9. Communicate with the Office of Admission/International
Student Recruitment staff on the transition for incoming students to the
College.
10. Develop and provide to the student, resource
information about the College, College policies including but not limited to
registration, drop/adding of classes, withdrawal, Student Code of Conducts and
other polices.
11. As a member of the Student Affairs, staff
participate in the Summer Orientation/Advisement program, Admission Office
events, Campus Activities, Multicultural and International Student Programs,
Residence Life, and other activities
sponsored by Student Affairs departments.
12. Co-Teach a section(s) of CORE 090 the First
Year Experience each semester as assigned by the Director of CORE 090.
13. Develop and conduct assessment on
International students’ experience at the College, share the result with
appropriate members of the College community, and develop plans for improvement
of the program.
14. Develop department goals and objectives and
carry out the College strategic goals related to international students.
15. Serve as a member of the Care Team and
Student Affairs Team participation in meetings as assigned.
16. Plan and coordinate a variety of academic,
cultural and social programs in collaboration with the Multicultural Student
Programs and Campus Activities Offices.
17. To complete other responsibilities and
projects as assigned by the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and
Dean of Students and Associate Vice President for Student Success and
Retention.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Experience working with international
students.
2. Experience working with and/or ability to
learn and carry out functions related to SEVIS for currently enrolled students.
3. Master’s degree preferred. bachelor’s degree
required
4. Ability to drive College vehicles for student
activities.
5. Proficient on the use of Microsoft WORD,
Excel, PowerPoint and related products.
Ability to learn College administrative computing systems (Elucian,
Moodle, Wedadvisor)
6. Ability to relate to college graduate and
undergraduate students, both traditional and non-traditional age of various
cultures, religions and backgrounds.
7. Obtain clearance from the Department of
Homeland Security and serve as a designated school official for Sevis.
8. Pass clearances required by the College,
including background checks (including but not limited to Child Abuse,
Pennsylvania Crime Check, FBI clearances and PA driving records)
9. Evening and weekend work required.
