POSITION: First-year Academic Studies
Program Coordinator
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt;
Full-Time (10 month)
DEPARTMENT: Academic Skills Center
REPORTS TO: Director of Academic Skills Center
JOB FUNCTION:
Provides direct academic advising, learning/study skills
training, and overall assistance in the transition to college for students with
disabilities in the First-year Academic Studies Program.
ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:
- Confers
with the Disability Services Coordinator and the Director of Admissions in
formulating admissions decisions for the First-year Academic Studies
Program(FASP)
- Consults
with the Tutorial Coordinator on the best approach for peer-based academic
assistance for FASP students.
- Plans
and implements the early move-in for students in the First-year Academic
Studies Program
- Serves
as a secondary academic advisor to students in FASP
- Completes
an initial needs assessment for students in the FASP
- Consults
on a regular basis with faculty teaching FASP students
- Consults
with parents of FASP students throughout the first year
- Meets
with FASP students to monitor academic progress, make specific academic
recommendations (i.e., course tutoring), implement accommodations, and
teach learning strategies.
- Develops
new techniques/programs to meet the needs of FASP
- Coordinates
services and meets regularly with FASP students enrolled in the summer
College Entry Program
- Plans
and coordinates accommodations (i.e., tape-recorders, note-takers,
alternative format text ) for FASP students
- Coordinates
with faculty the testing accommodations (i.e., untimed, computer-assisted,
and other appropriate accommodations) for FASP students
- Acts
as a resource to faculty in implementing accommodations/strategies for
FASP students
- Develops
programming with Director of Academic Skills Center for faculty/staff
training
- Serves,
as needed, as test proctor and facilitator for students require extended
and/or alternative testing
- Assists
in the day-to-day management of the Academic Skills Center
- Coordinates
and teaches workshops on learning strategies for all students
NON-ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS
1. Represents
the FAS Program at Open House events
2. Provides
information on issues of disabilities to professional staff
3. Regularly
attends professional development conferences and workshops.
4. Performs
other related duties as assigned
REQUIRE SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND
TRAINING
A master’s degree in Education or related field. Demonstrated knowledge of the current theory
and practice in the field of disabilities with practical experience supporting
students with learning disabilities, ADHD, Anxiety, Autism Spectrum Disorders,
etc. Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse
populations. Demonstrated administrative skills.
