TITLE: Coordinator of English Language Development Support
Services / Academic Advisor
CLASSIFICATION: 12-month

Success
JOB FUNCTION:
The goal of position is to support the English language development of King’s
College students who are English language learners (ELLs) with a special focus
on international students, programming and socialization to facilitate English
development, and academic success and retention. The position also includes
serving as the principal Academic Advisor for a caseload of first-year
international students, and then serving as those students’ general advisor for
the remainder of their time at King’s College.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Serve as a central resource to ELLs seeking
guidance for academic or social issues and either advise appropriately or refer
to relevant personnel.
2. Work closely with the English department, the
Writing Center and the Academic Skills Office to coordinate English as a Second
Language (ESL) support services, such as walk-in ESL tutoring.
3. Assist the Tutorial Coordinator of the Academic
Skills Office in connecting ELL students with tutors and hiring international
students as tutors.
4. Teach 1-2 sections of ENGL 109 Introductory Composition – a remedial
writing course for ELL students – each fall, spring and summer semester.
5. Hold regular one-on-one meetings with
international students on academic probation to guide them in improving their
academic performance.
6. Develop programs that increase the socialization
and linguistic development of international students with native-English
speaking students, e.g. a language partner program.
7. Collaborate with the International Academic
Advisor and the Coordinator of International Student Services to create and
meet the goals and needs of international students at the College.
8. Participate in the International Orientation
Program for new international students each semester and the International
Summer Start Program.

Acts as a first-year
academic advisor for a group of new international students:
a.
Advise students
individually regarding CORE and Major course requirements, course selection,
academic policies and procedures, and academic resources.
b.
Monitor academic
progress through mid-term deficiencies/grades and the Academic Alert reporting
system and develop strategies to helps them succeed.
c.
Meet with advisees a
minimum of two times per semester and as necessary.
d.
Inform advisees of
significant deadlines regarding Course Add, Course Drop, Mid-Terms, Course
Withdrawals, and Academic Support Services.
e.
Maintain advising
records and confidential student records in compliance with FERPA regulations.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Liaise with other offices that serve English
language learners in the individual outreach and support of ELL and/or
international students, including but not limited to the International Academic
Advisor, the Coordinator of International Student Services, the Office of
International Recruitment, McGowan Hispanic Outreach, and the Director of
Multicultural and International Student Programs/Diversity.
2. Collaborate with Director of Academic Skills to
develop and implement workshops tailored to the needs of ELL and international
students.
3. Participate in relevant conferences and other
events that contribute to continued professional development.
4. Perform other related duties and
responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Master’s degree in English as a Second Language,
Applied Linguistics, Education or other related discipline required.
2. At least 1-2 years of experience teaching English
as a Second Language at the secondary or post-secondary level.
3. Capacity to utilize new and evolving social
media for purpose of contacting advisees.
4. Excellent organizational and management skills.
Ability to organize one’s work well and to manage distractions and multiple
demands.
5. Demonstrated competence in program development
and experience in working with diverse groups in instructional settings,
including students, faculty, staff, and other campus services professionals.
6. Basic knowledge of immigration regulations
pertinent to F-1 students preferred.
7. Strong support of the Catholic identity and
mission of King’s College.
8. Commitment to the principles of diversity,
