Dean of Health Sciences

 

King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, PA, is seeking its inaugural Dean of Health Sciences.  This position is being created in response to the College’s strategic commitment to the continued development of outstanding health sciences programs, and is a great opportunity for an individual to provide dynamic leadership to this endeavor. 

 

The Dean of the Health Sciences will provide administrative leadership by directing the faculty and curricular affairs of the health sciences programs. The College currently offers an M.S. in Physician Assistant Studies (accredited by ARC-PA), a B.S. in Athletic Training (accredited by CAATE), and a B.S. in Exercise Science.  The College is also collaborating with Luzerne County Community College to offer an innovative new 1+2+1 Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, with plans to enroll the first class in fall 2018.  Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, key responsibilities include the oversight of academic planning and budgeting, leadership in recruiting and evaluating faculty, leadership in recruiting and developing clinical sites for the College’s programs, and leadership in exploring and developing new health sciences programs. 

 

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. or other terminal degree in the health sciences, a substantial record (10 or more years) of excellent undergraduate teaching, professional accomplishment commensurate with senior faculty rank (associate professor or professor), and professional service within the academic community, a minimum of three years of administrative experience as a department chairperson, program director, or dean (which must include significant experience with the recruitment, mentoring, and evaluation of faculty), successful experience in the development and administration of academic policy, academic planning, and budgeting, and prior familiarity with health sciences accrediting processes.  Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate strong support of the Catholic identity and mission of King's College, commitment to the principles of diversity, fairness, and public service, understanding of current issues and future directions in higher education, strong communication, interpersonal and critical problem-solving skills, and the ability to make difficult decisions in a timely manner and to motivate others.

POSITION REPORTS TO:              Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

 

JOB FUNCTION: The Dean of the Health Sciences provides administrative leadership by directing the faculty and curricular affairs of the School of Health Sciences, including the Physician Assistant Program, Athletic Training, Exercise Science, and Nursing.    

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

 

1.      Oversees academic planning for health sciences programs. 

2.      Oversees the faculty recruitment process for the health sciences.

3.      Oversees faculty evaluation in the health sciences.  This includes conducting annual review conferences and annual classroom observations of probationary health sciences faculty.

4.      Collaborates with chairpersons and program directors in the health sciences in evaluating and providing professional development opportunities for full-time and part-time health sciences faculty.

5.      Provides administrative leadership in recruiting and developing clinical sites for health science academic programs.

6.      Responsible for the orientation, mentoring, and evaluation of health sciences department chairs and program directors.

7.      Serves as consultant to health sciences department chairs and program directors on questions, concerns, and ideas regarding personnel and program development. 

8.      Supervises program-level health sciences budgets. 

9.      Participates with the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in promoting and supporting academic grant proposals relevant to the health sciences.

10.  Leads the development of existing and new programs in the health sciences.

11.  Oversees health sciences accreditation processes.

12.  Leads community outreach efforts in the health sciences.

13.  Supervises the allocation of professional development funds for faculty in the health sciences. 

14.  Collaborates with health sciences chairpersons and program directors on recruitment endeavors. 

15.  Represents King’s College to outside constituencies, especially the local and regional health care communities.

16.  Oversees the assessment of academic effectiveness in the health sciences, including assessment of student learning in all health science programs. 

17.  Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.      Earned Ph.D. or other terminal degree in the health sciences.

2.      A substantial record (10 or more years) of excellent undergraduate teaching, scholarly accomplishment commensurate with senior faculty rank (associate professor or professor), and professional service within the academic community.

3.      A minimum of three years of administrative experience as a department chairperson or dean, which must include significant experience in the recruiting, mentoring, and evaluating faculty. 

4.      Successful experience in the development and administration of academic policy, academic planning, and budgeting. 

5.      Prior familiarity with health sciences accrediting processes.

6.      Strong support for the Catholic identity and mission of King's College.

7.      Commitment to the principles of diversity, fairness, and public service.

8.      Understanding of current issues and future directions in higher education.
