POSITION:                                        Circulation Assistant

POSITION REPORTS TO:               Circulation Supervisor

 

SCHEDULE:                                      Friday, Saturday & Sunday,

 

JOB FUNCTION:  The Circulation Assistant assists the Circulation Supervisor with the circulation and stack maintenance of the Library’s collection.  In the absence of other supervisory personnel, assumes responsibility for the general supervision of the Library and the routine operations of the Circulation Department.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

1.      Monitors and communicates information to appropriate personnel.

2.      Assists with the training and supervision of student assistants.

3.      Assists patrons in the use of the Library and the location of materials.

4.      Registers direct borrowers. Charges out, check in, and remove materials.

5.      Monitors and updates date due cards.

6.      Informs patrons of overdue materials, fines and special messages.  Procedures and sends overdue notices.  Levies and collects fines.

7.      Monitors and operates security panels.

8.      Calls security or consults with appropriate library personnel about unusual situations in the library.

9.      Assist with stack maintenance (picks up, sorts, counts and puts books in to-be-shelved area.)

10.  Prepares trucks of books for shelving, shelves books, read shelves.

11.  Assists with interlibrary loan procedures.

 

NONESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

 

1.      Answers phones, transfers calls, picks up calls and takes messages.

2.      Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 

 

 

 

REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Possess the ability to work comfortably with the public.  Ability to interpret and explain policy, make observations and provide feedback.  Ability to perform clerical tasks.  Library experience preferred.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Ability to stand, sit, stoop and reach for long periods of time.  Ability to bend and lift up to 30 lb. on a regular basis.
