Advisor/International Student Coordinator

JOB FUNCTION:
The Academic Advisor/International Student Coordinator provides educational guidance and assistance for undeclared and first-year students with a special emphasis on international students. There are three major areas within the position: one is to offer support to the students during the Add/Drop, Advisement, Registration, and Course Withdrawal periods. The second is to help students improve their academic performance by recommending appropriate courses, assisting with scheduling, and determining appropriate educational solutions. The third is to carefully monitor at-risk students and develop and oversee a Student Action Plan for students placed on academic probation.
1. Works closely with the
International Student Advisor (Student Affairs) in serving our international student population.
2. Assists in the coordination
of the Orientation Program for new international students each semester in conjunction with the
College’s Orientation Program.
3. Assists in the coordination
of placement testing for all new freshmen, transfer and international students.
4. Advises and counsels
first-year students for Fall, Spring, and Summer
semester course selections.
5.
Conducts initial advisement appointments with new students each semester.
6.
Monitors first-year students’ academic progress and develops strategies
for their success.
7. Receives and gives referrals
to and from faculty and other College administrators for students' major
considerations, academic issues, or personal
concerns.
8.
Reviews student records in preparation for advisement appointments and follow-ups.
9. Implements various special
programs and projects as assigned by the Director of Academic Advisement.
10.
Teaches a section of CORE 090, First-Year Experience each semester.
11. Participates in office staff
development, workshops, programs, and administrative
functions and meetings.
12. Engages in professional
development activities by participating in conferences, training sessions, and
webinars to stay current in the best practices of academic advising.
13. Acquires working knowledge
of the College’s policies and procedures, core/program requirements, academic
rules and regulations, campus resources, student life, and support services

Serves as a member of the International Student Orientation Committee.
2.
Serves as a member of the New Student Orientation Committee.
3.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Master’s Degree required
·
Advanced computer skills with expertise in various software packages
·
Experience working with international
students
·
Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, including
minority and international students
·
Excellent interpersonal/human relations skills
·
Sound written and oral communication
skills
·
Ability to encourage and empower students to make sound academic and
career decisions
·
Ability to identify students' needs for support services, make
appropriate referrals, and maintain confidentiality
·
Availability for occasional evening and/or weekends functions
